Windows 10 to force you to use Edge, even if it isn't default browser

steviebuk Silver badge

1998 all over again...

...but this time instead of "Deposition by Bill Gates" we'll be seeing "Deposition by Satya Nadella"

I remember those times when the rumour was, once MS lost, Microsoft was going to be forced to break up. Although that never happened.

The EU will hit MS with a MASSIVE hammer over this. Satya seems to be ignoring history.

AMD security flaw saga, browsers broken, Lamo dead at 37, and more

I've been saying....

...for years how poor the lottery sites security is. For years they only allowed numbers and letters for a password and a small length. The originally didn't have a reset password option, you had to call them and it was clear the weak password policy was to cut down all support calls.

Eventually they allowed special characters but they don't tell you this when you change your password, they still have the wording numbers and letters.

They still have yet to implement 2 factor authentication.

I'm suprised they haven't been hit sooner.

I have the last model, I bought 2. One too hook up to the TV and do stuff with and one to stick on a touch screen. I briefly used the one on the TV and haven't touched it since. The one to go on the touch screen, I still haven't even opened the touch screen.

The other older model I also used briefly and never went further.

I'm a lazy shit.

Too many bricks in the wall? Lego slashes inventory

steviebuk Silver badge

I love it...

...I don't know what it is but I still love Lego. An Adult Fan of Lego (it's a thing). But I only really like the sets as I have no imagination. But their biggest issue is greed with their prices. The Death Star that was recently retired was then re-released about a few months to a year later. Only a few extra bricks were added. Most of the design was the same yet they believe they are justified in raising the price of the new set over £100 more than it was. THIS is their big issue.

Re: shortage

But with long hours and no social life. Check out the book "This is going to hurt". Your shift is over and its time to go home, but oh, someones suddenly dying. Do you let them or stay on for another few hours to make sure they live knowing you won't get those hours or money back but still need to be in early for your next shift. Then have a crappy commute because the hospital won't give you a parking space.

I was too innocent and....

....a little thick when I was a kid. Innocent that whenever we'd got to WHSmith I'd only ever type:

10 PRINT "STEVE WAS HERE"

20 GOTO 10

I never wrote naughty words. Never even thought of it.

Its now over 30 years later and watching old videos on shows about the BBC and BASIC that I realise why it was 10, 20, 30 and sometimes jumped to 100. They were simple times and I was a bit thick so never investigated but turns out they were in 10s in case you wanted to add lines in between. I believe this was all in the manual but I clearly couldn't be bothered to read that.

More evidence of being thick was I knew you could load from tape, which I did now and then when would get a free tape from a mag. But I never realised I could of written back to a blank tape. So the odd times I'd sit and type up a game from a book, I would play it then loose it once bored of that session. Little did I know I could of just saved it to a blank tape.

The only game I 100% remember and enjoyed was a horse racing game that I believe was in the manual.

I'm an IT tech now but back then I wasn't that interested so if I typed up a game that never worked, I never thought about reading into BASIC and finding out where the bug was. I think the crappy keyboard put me off at the time. I hated that flat keyboard. Always wanted the one with the raised keys.

Not surprised but...

...sad to see them go. But as people have said management are to blame with their stupid high prices. Thinking they'd be able to con non technical people into paying the high prices. What eventually happens is everyone warns them and they get bad rep.

Sader to see Toys R Us go as have fun memories of them in the 80s. Walking down the aisle looking at all the Master System games and then checking the Star Wars figures. That's got to be another management problem here and the US. If Argos can survive Toys R Us should of.

We don't miss most of the things on the list, they just create nostalgia. If you had to do all those things again you'd long for current times instead. A bit like the Milky Way advert the Red car vs the Blue car. Saw it a few years ago as they bought the advert back. Was very nostalgic. That lasted about 2 viewings at which point it then became as annoying as it was back when I originally saw it back in 89.

-----

Cash Converters Webshop has recently been subject to an online security breach. We are taking this extremely seriously and have provided you with details of the breach below.

Please be reassured that – alongside the relevant authorities – we are investigating this as a matter of urgency and priority. We are also actively implementing measures to ensure that this cannot happen again.

Our customers truly are at the heart of everything we do and we are both disappointed and saddened that you have been affected. We apologise for this situation and are taking immediate action to address it.

What has happened

• Cash Converters was notified that a third party had potentially gained unauthorised access to a Cash Converters’ UK customer database.

• The data that has been accessed relates to Cash Converters UK data from a recently decommissioned Webshop site. This site was decommissioned when the new website was launched in September 2017. This site was hosted by an external third party.

• Please be assured that the Webshop site currently in operation has not been affected.

What information was involved

• The customer data that has been accessed includes Webshop account names, passwords and delivery addresses. Please note, this does not include your credit card details.

• This information is limited to Webshop and has no impact on store activity.

What are we doing

• Cash Converters is working with the relevant authorities in Australia and the UK to investigate this matter.

• Although some details relating to the cyber security breach remain confidential while Cash Converters works with the relevant authorities, we will continue to provide as much detail as possible as it becomes available.

• We have reset all UK Webshop user passwords and they will need to be changed the next time that you log on. This has been done to reduce the risk that any customers used the same password on both the old and current Webshop sites.

• The current Webshop site was independently and thoroughly security tested as part of its development process. We have no reason to believe it has any vulnerability, however additional testing is being completed to get assurance of this.

What you can do

• Please change your Webshop password the next time that you log on.

• If you used the same Webshop password on other websites, please also consider changing these passwords.

More information

• We are continuing to assess and validate the potential impact of this incident. We will keep you updated as soon as new and relevant information becomes available.

• If you would like to speak to somebody directly about this, please call the Action Fraud team on 0300 123 2040.

Identity theft prevention tips

1. Be aware of phishing – some identity thieves pretend to be banks, shops or government agencies, over the phone and via email. No legitimate provider would ever ask you to confirm your identity in this way. Unless you made the contact, don’t give out any personal details. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to say “no”.

2. Make your passwords complicated – use different passwords for each of your different accounts. Ensure your passwords are at least eight characters and contain letters, numerics and punctuation marks.

3. Protect your phone and laptop – when in public, protect your phone and laptop screen from view, especially when entering personal and banking information.

4. Check your credit report – it’s a good idea to check your credit report and rating once a year to ensure that there haven’t been any debts or accounts opened in your name. You can check for free using Noddle or Experian.

Donald, YOU'RE FIRED: Rogue Twitter worker quits, deletes President Trump's account

I assume...

...they can't do anything to the contractor as was their last day and they clearly had the required permissions. Or even if they didn't and did something naughty to get those permissions, I'm assuming they still can't do anything as that person has left.

To cover themselves anyway, they could of just simply put a note on the account

"Disabled due to constant violation of Twitters T&Cs".

That would be correct and accurate but because of who Trump is, they let him get away with it.

Genuinely curious. What's wrong with Comodo? Has been fine for me for years and seems quite powerful. I'm aware they've pretty much stolen Process Explorer it would seems with their version that looks shockingly similar. But still been good.

Only issue is GeekBuddy. That should be avoided and I guess we should be pulling them up just for that alone.

Ex-Harrods IT man cleared of stealing company issued laptop

steviebuk Silver badge

IT worker?

People can't say "He shouldn't of had personal stuff on the laptop". Everyone does it eventually. You'll end up with some personal documents on there at some point. However, if he's an "IT worker" surely he should know that upon returning the device it would of been wiped, so claiming he was doing it because he wanted the data wiped seems a bit of an odd argument. However, it's possible he knew someone in the department would snoop. But the next question is, why did he take it to a computer shop? Was he not an IT engineer then? As if he knew what he was doing he'd have been able to get into it himself, then no one would of know and no court case would of happened.

Seems odd, unless he was just a manager for IT but wasn't really IT savvy (I know some IT managers who know fuck all about IT).
