IT team forced to camp in the office for days after Y2K bug found in boss's side project

steviebuk Silver badge

THIS. THIS IS THE STORY THAT NEEDS TO BE TOLD!

The amount of "quiz shows" etc that bring up the Y2K event and the "comedians" always take the piss that "nothing happened" ignore that "nothing happened" because people people spent months BEFORE the date fucking fixing it.

I would say I missed out on all the money earned then as was just finishing off a HND so not in work, but appears so did lots of people when companies were being tight and just gave people the bollocks of Time off in Lieu.

Hacktivists scrape 86M Spotify tracks, claim their aim is to preserve culture

steviebuk Silver badge

I tried that in the 90s while camping with my parents and cousin. He was learning Spanish so we made a plan, I'd fall asleep first with the headphones on and he'd press play on the walkman once I'd fallen asleep. I woke up half way through the night thinking he'd forgotten but no, he'd done it and the headphones were still on my head. That whole tape of Spanish is in there somewhere but I've never recalled any of it.

You don't. You can not pay and prove you've not consumed their content. At work, you're covered as its work that have to pay for the license.

They are funding other channels. Channel 4 gets some along with ITV. It help Channel 4 over the years do its arty TV work that no other commercial channel would take.

And its Ad Free and has created the best show ever The Antiques Roadshow. I've been watching that since I was a kid in the 80s. What I am annoyed about is lack of old shows of theirs on iplayer which they should be, as we've funded them.

AI-authored code contains worse bugs than software crafted by humans

steviebuk Silver badge

Yes I know

but when you only know a tiny bit of Powershell, sometimes using chatGPT is useful to just slap something together. I know its flawed, but can help but also seeing how shit it is yet management in companies think its amazing and can replace staff.

CoPilot, despite using ChatGPT, with a proper license, struggles after about the 5th question given to it about writing a powershell script. So bad it freezes for about 5mins a time, then gets so bad its just unusable. You'll get it to basically do what you want, ask it to add a bit and it breaks the 1st part. You'll get it to fix it, which it does, ask it to add something and it does but puts the broken code back in the first part that you told it was broken earlier.

I switched to ChatGPT direct which was much faster. But you'll ask it to do something where ' are involved and it knows full well that if it uses smart unicode ', powershell breaks yet still uses it. The code was failing with the incorrect error by powershell but looking at the code I spotted the smart unicode. ChatGPT admitted it was wrong, so why use it in the first place.

Again, I dislike most of the AI shit but its useful for slapping stuff together without people on reddit or stackoverflow saying "If you don't know the basic starts there, blah blah blah".

Old but I'll reply anyway. The problem with stopping spoof is you can do it for legit reasons. GGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Fucking annoys the fuck out of me

""The new deal that we've done with Microsoft drove much lower prices across the range of products. We noticed as a consequence that customers across government waited to renew their purchases from Microsoft until we'd done the deal and signed their new contracts because we'd been able to negotiate a better deal," he said.

"Where we are buying from big vendors, we need to improve the value for money that we get. We've done that with Microsoft. We've also done a strategic agreement with Google on the buying of Google Cloud, which again has the same objective.""

You haven't done a good deal. They've made you THINK you're getting a good deal. They'll tie you in THEN raise the prices, they always do this. Anyone can tell you they do this. But because its the fucking easy option you make out you've got a "good deal". At which point you'll leave to fool the next company you're great.

You should have been looking at moving back in house as it would be cheaper than the cloud. You could even have hybrid, which would be cheaper than cloud. Google is dead. Its not for large business' as is fucking awful.

But oh no, instead you listen to the smarmy sales cunts and the big corporations. Get praised for bullshit and move on and grift elsewhere.

For several years I've been saying full cloud is a bad idea and will be MORE expensive. For months I was getting told "No, you're wrong. It will be cheaper as you'll be getting rid of your old kit". As always, I was ignored and they were listened to until recently. Someone kicked off "Why is our bill increasing? You said it would be cheaper to go full cloud". They've finally admitted "Of course its not going to be cheaper". Its in THEIR best interest that we are fully cloud, not ours.

I smirked but said nothing.

Fuck whits.

Although neither protect from 3rd party contractors who themselves have had a mailbox breach. So all the phishing is coming from a trusted mailbox.

steviebuk Silver badge

Re: Hmm

True. As I was leaving a company, I wrote a guide for the main software they use. The install step by step and any errors that may come up and how to fix.

I write my guides how I want them, no assumptions. I don't assume someone knows something about certain areas. So I put every step in and try and include photos.

I still got one of the other engineers to run through it to check he and others could follow it. He found some "assumptions" which I corrected.

Appears to have been of little use as the new engineer that came in ignored my guides, so I'm told by the department. They were telling me the new engineer had this issue that he hasn't been able to resolve for days. I said "Thats in my guide, its a simple fix when you know. Why isn't he using it?" They said he claimed "Oh that was written by the last engineer, its all changed since then so I don't refer to it".

Nothing had changed, it was exactly the fucking same, he was just to much of a fuck whit to except help when needed.

The rule was you don't do jokes that stop someone from working, however, this guy was a cunt & got someone fired once so we did it more to prove a point, that he was shit and a grifter. The person that should have been given the boot was him.

It worked. Took him ages to work out what the issue was, with a lot of ranting during, then finding it out what happened, getting annoyed then switching to finding it a bit funny, mutterings of reporting it to management.

We all still found it funny, it proved he was a grifter and a cunt.

'What the hell, Microsoft?' Users hit with incorrect ESU and LTSC Win10 out-of-support messages

steviebuk Silver badge

Problem is usability really. Linux is nice and all but not always easy to understand and use. Open source is great but they tend to have no customer facing, marketing skills. Take openJDK for example. That is an ARSE to navigate, this site is truly shit, especially for finding a downloading for Windows. Yes, a couple of clicks away maybe but really its not great. Yet I discovered the other day MS have made their build of it and its a simple MSI download, so of course, the folks that don't know will head for the Microsoft MSI release, its just easier.

is why the ESU machines we have are getting this shitty message. And there was me going to have to waste my time confirming the ESU key was actually applied.

I'm trying it again

Last time I installed it, I was under the assumption it would block all ads on sites like The Mirror etc. All the news paper sites with the "Pay to still get adverts but ones that aren't targetted towards you" but it doesn't block any of that due to the way the sites work. I started to feel more and more pi-hole seemed totally pointless.

I'm trying it again but still getting same results.
