Open-source companies gather to gripe: Cloud giants sell our code as a service – and we get the square root of nothing

Danny Boyd

Re: In a normal universe

Define "volunteer". How much do you think "volunteers" are paid, and why are they called "volunteers"?

That's the root of the problem: OSS has been built on volunteers' (unkind folks even say "hobbyists'") efforts, and now these volunteers don't want to be volunteers anymore, they want to be contractors or employees.

Fat chance.

I must be missing something - they say they are concerned with Microsoft's telemetry, and they consider Google G-Suite as an alternative? Is this some sick kind of joke?

Re: Common Sense by the Chinese.

Petrol is definitely not a good thing to swallow or inhale, but if you do that by accident, you get nothing more than some unpleasant taste. Swallowing methanol or inhaling its vapors will at least make you blind and a significant exposure will kill you. Appreciate the difference.

That's why they add ethanol, not methanol, to the petrol these days (and Brazilians are happily running their cars on pure ethanol).

Danny Boyd

Re: Common Sense by the Chinese.

It is not until it's mixed with oxygen. And leaking hydrogen, being lighter than air, moves up and away.

Danny Boyd

Re: Common Sense by the Chinese.

Don't forget to mention that methanol is highly poisonous in liquid or gaseous form.

How do we stop facial recognition from becoming the next Facebook: ubiquitous and useful yet dangerous, impervious and misunderstood?

Danny Boyd

That was a reference to China, not lack of understanding of term "social contract". Thanks for the clarification though.

Yeah, sure. And "social credit" too.

Trump: Huawei ban will be lifted!
US Commerce Dept.: Yeah, about that…

Danny Boyd

I'm merely saying that DOC stated the fact that the ban is still in force. DOC didn't say "Oh no you won't!" when Trump said the ban *might be* lifted.

Danny Boyd
Thumb Down

"Might be lifted", "Will be lifted" and "Is lifted" are not exactly one and the same thing. DOC is not "holding strong on the ban", they merely state that the ban hasn't been lifted yet.

ReactOS 'a ripoff of the Windows Research Kernel', claims Microsoft kernel engineer

Danny Boyd

Re: Precedents already set?

Nobody is suing nobody. Microsoft released Research Kernel (redacted Server 2003 kernel) to academia in 2004-2005 as part of Windows-based OS course curriculum. The universities signing up for this OS course agreed not to publish the code on outside and to use it solely for teaching and experimenting purposes. Nonetheless the code almost immediately appeared within public reach.

Did Microsoft sue the universities for breach of contract? No.

Was Microsoft so stupid not to anticipate it would happen? No.

I haven't seen ReactOS code, but I have seen Research Kernel code. Believe me, it is easily recognizable, so Rietschin is most probably right.

Facepalm

People go on the social media to socialize, meaning blabber things about themselves, their relatives, friends and acquaintances. What privacy are we talking about when the central function of social media is publication and dissemination of private (sometimes false) information? You can make a social media platform distributed, open-sourced, whatever. The implementation details. Its central function will still be the same.

People who value their privacy simply don't post anything on social media. Don't look for privacy where it can't be found by definition.

Before we lose our minds over sentient AI, what about self-driving cars that can't detect kids crossing the road?

Danny Boyd

I don't quite understand how the problem of unrepresentative learning data sets (which leads to AI systems discriminating by race, gender, etc.) became a problem of "The workforces of Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple lack women, people of color, and people with disabilities, relatively speaking."

Adding women and people of color to AI development won't resolve the problem of unrepresentative learning data sets, because I don't think AI developers are so stupid they train their AI systems exclusively on their own faces and voices.

I have nothing against women and people of color, I just fail to see logical connection between two problems.

Ghengis Khan taking the St.Petersburg? That's news worthy disseminating!

FYI:(1) Ghengis Khan never invaded Russia, his descendants (Batu et al.) did.

(2)Tartar-Monghol rule in Russia ended in late 14th century (1380), at the battle of Kulikovo field, where the forces of Dmitry Donskoy defeated forces of Mamai.

(3) St.Petersburg was founded by Tzar Peter I The Great in 1703.
