Another trick used on a 3Com 3Server

We had hundreds of 3Com 3Servers - a headless fileserver with SCSI drives installed at sites all around the US at our clients. They worked quite well, but sometimes when restarted, they would just hang. I found a solution when I was on site once and didn't want to deal with doing an old restore. You could hear the drive start to spin, then after a few seconds it would power down. So, I figured, it just wasn't getting up to speed. The trick was to power on the box, listen to it spin, turn it off then right back on again. Might take several tries. Jump starting a drive. It worked most every time. Of course, then you'd get a backup and a new drive on the way, but it bought time. And I can still remember the "you want me to do WHAT?" response from a client. As well as the "wow, thanks!".
