"In this case, Derrick Coetzee and Wikimedia are asserting an opinion on the law, i.e. that reproductions of public-domain works should be considered public domain under U.K. law"

So you're excusing it on the grounds that it's legal in the US and the perpetrators think it should be legal in the UK too, so that makes it OK?

Paris, 'cos even she wouldn't think of a justification so weak.

Define a new market

Hear, hear.

FOSS is awesome and Apple don't innovate and their products are sub-standard, right? So instead of waiting for Apple to rejuvenate the MP3 player/smartphone/tablet computer market (which they didn't do 'cos they all existed before and were better, apparently) and then bringing out 'me-too' products, just put those amazing innovation, marking and 'what the public want' skills to good use and find your own niche. Problem solved.

Paris - giving the (male) public what they want.

LOL indeed.

If these are all essential, then why don't people either a) not buy them when realising in the shop that they can't do these things b) return them after getting home having realised the same.

The fact is that NONE of these are truly essential:

Keyboard - the iPad's on-screen effort is OK for emails etc. (USB & BT keyboards can be used).

Browseable filesystem - most non-IT people wouldn't know what this is and again, what for? any useable document is generally available via it's app.

USB ports and other connectors - what for? (that's essential for day-today usage).

Side-loading and content lock-in - OK - 26 years in IT and *I* don't know what this is. I know the iPad plays standard content.

Higher resolution cameras and displays - again, what for? The iPad's ones do what they are designed for.

These are all *nice* features, but none are essential.

Toshiba Regza 32UL863 32in LED TV

Steve Ives
Paris Hilton

Why is sharp so desireable?

So it's the sharpest therefore buy it? Why? Real life isn't that sharp nor is the cinema. My 8-year old 720p projector appeared less colourful, less bright and not as sharp as my old 854x480 (upscaling) plasma, let alone in comparison to my new 1080p LCD, yet the projector image is more pleasing to the eye (in a darkened room) than either of them, producing a more cinematic, true-to-life image.

Sharp & bright is slightly more suitable to gaming, but I'd still prefer to unroll the screen for some serious Forza, GT5 or CoD/Bf3 action (perhaps it's the 96" vs42" screen siye that does it).

So, one of the potentially best applications (i.e. gaming) is not tested because the reviewer needs to look at the controller to play? (Like my Mum - who also wuoldn't be able to play in a darkened room). Don't you have any one under the age of 60 available?

Whilst a lot of these patents disputes seem petty, If *I'd* invented something worth millions, I'd be unhappy if others were using it without paying for it, and I'd also be unhappy if I'd come up with a some clever software technique for my product only to be told I couldn't sell it because company X said that software technique was theirs and I couldn't use it.

Here we go again...

Why are Microsoft always saying "This new thing we've got coming out sometime in the future? It's really great ." They seems to completely redesign everything every few years whilst implying that the last redesign wasn't very good, making you wonder why this iteration of the cycle should be any different.

They need to come up with some coherent stretegy, keeping a similar look-and-feel, which wwoul dgive out the message that they are confident in the product, even if redesigning things under the covers, and then say "Here's the new version of X; it's familiar but better and it's available now."

Microsoft resuscitates 'I'm a PC' ads to fight Apple

Steve Ives
FAIL

Not a good ad...

I left the Windows world pretty much behind in 2003, having bought a Mac Powerbook ('cos it looked v. stylish - G4, 800) for email and web-browsing whilst away from my Windows desktop and then getting sucked into the whole Apple way of doing things. (I'm very technical, and my Apple gear does all that I need it to) but don't feel the need to bash Microsoft non-stop but I have to say that this is not a good ad - where's the excitement? Where's the snazzy UI? Say what you like about Apple, but their ads are generally brilliant. They even make the magnetic cover exciting! I was shown nothing in that ad that I want to have a go on.

Apple's 'App Store trademark': A farce of Jobsian proportions

Steve Ives

Peeved?

"I'm peeved because this means either the author does not know as much as he would like to think he does, or worse, assumes that we, the readers, don't."

I know nothing about the author, but it's safe to assume Internet forum readers don't know much about trademark/copyright laws - I certainly don't - and wouldn't get upset at the assumption. Apple, Dell, Windows, Subway etc are all trademarks, despite being common terms.

Steve

Steve Ives
Paris Hilton

But there are precedents...

If you had a warehouse to store carphones, good luck with trademarking 'Carphone Warehouse', or if you had a shack selling radios or a store selling subways or, heaven forbid, a store selling apples...

The opposing lawyers are saying that 'app store' simply describes what the thing is, but I think there's a difference between what something is (an app store) and what you call it (The App Store) - I could own an apple store, but I couldn't call it The Apple Store.

Yes, trademarking App Store might seem silly, but if the US laws allowed it, wouldn't you do the same?

itunes Just works for me

Define what you want on you iPad / iPhone /iPod by setting up the necessary playlist etc - takes 10-15 minutes. Then connect the cable, leave it for however long it takes to transfer the stuff and you're done.

Manually dragging and dropping every single bit of media/book/apps etc you want on it? Who on Earth would do that? Probably the same sort of people who had to set alarm clocks to tell then when to switch the video on and off.
