Just wondering if it is the same lot who had some "improvements" made to the javascript on their page recently meaning some customers' credit cards got "borrowed"...
Ever since hyper-threading was introduced it's been pointed out that it may be bad for performance for many (most?) workloads because the two hardware threads would be fighting each other for the (single) cache.
This is standard practice in HPC land; in addition to the cache, the tight loops that typically get run in this scenario mean that there is competition for the same registers.

Apple upgrades aren't perfect either, a quick look around the Internet in the days after an upgrade make that very clear. I had to do a restore on my work iPhone when going to 12.0 (why I upgrade using my MBP and not just "over the air").
For a while after I graduated I had an old (even at the time) 486 DX2. The SIMM slots on the motherboard were always fragile and at some point I'd broken one. As programmes got more and more RAM hungry eventually I had to populate the other slots, but the SIMM wouldn't remain upright, one elastic band later I had a stable system. The elastic band remained in place until I bought a new PC and gave the old one away.

I can't get my head around having to pay to access the data that your organisation has created; it's your company's data not SAP's....
Although not a 5GB file; my photography habit can quite require an order of magnitude more data to be backed up. Sports and nature photography mean lots of raw files; although I cull the vast majority I'm paranoid enough to back all the files up initially.
As I have a good connection, I also host torrents for Linux distros.
Just what consumers need on a 2000 quid portable device with 1TB of storage for convenience of adding lots of media files to consume!
The only use case I can think of is a photographer who uses loads RAW files into Adobe Lightroom on the iPad where they then load into the "Creative Cloud".
Annoyingly Lightroom doesn't sync with "Photos" so you have to do a cull manually.

If this works then this is huge for the field. When you make and develop drugs you need to ensure that the "Polymorph" that patients get is the same as the one that was in Clinical Trials. There have been cases where this has not been the case; there was even a case where an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ritonavir>HIV drug had to be temporarily withdrawn</a> because the active ingredient's molecules were changing structure on the pharmacies' shelves. Moreover, it could also make drugs that scientists know works into a form that a patient can actually take.
If drug companies and regulators can carry out this kind of simulation quicker then this could save lives as well as save lots of money. The increase in throughput that this is claimed to offer would mean that many more drug candidates can be virtually screened for this kind of activity.

Even assuming the Supermicro hacking story turns out to be utter bollocks; I imagine that it will have worried enough people who will start caring about where their servers and other computer gear come from.
Also anyone who refers to their internet connection as "my internet" shouldn't be allowed to work in IT.
I once worked at a place where the head of IT was the boss' brother, his knowledge of computers was shall we say PHB-like. He once emailed the company saying that he'd "fixed the Internet" implying he'd sorted the while thing :)
So you as a customer would rather pay 10x what you do now so they can completely rebuild their networks every 18 months?
If the ISPs put in FTTP then a change in technology would probably just mean swapping the devices at each end of the fibre.
I'm not sure what to think here; on the one hand it avoids some people being priced out of where they live. On the other hand, according to the story in the Local, Google no longer have plans to put a centre in Berlin which means the money will go elsewhere on the planet and possibly the new businesses won't be formed.
An Australian government agency given AU$700,000 (just shy of US$500,000 or £380,000) to research applications of the blockchain has delivered its answer: don't bother. Anything you want to do with blockchain, you can already do better with existing technology.
On the face of it, it sounds expensive... However, that 700kAUD is money well spent if it means that their techies can swiftly eliminate blockchain from various proposals by pointing at the report instead of letting the PHBs get fooled and waste a load of money in the process.
