I once worked somewhere where there was a major fire (~10 fire engines). The laptops in the affected part of the building really didn't like inhaling all the smoke and whatnot and were all sent away for specialist cleaning. We wondered why they weren't just replaced as the cleaning was expensive. I think all the cleaned computers died after a few months anyway...

I save an engineer in the same situation once. He was upgrading some instrument controller Macs to the wonders of OSX. One of the computer's hard discs decided that was the time to die (maybe the amount of IO didn't help). I managed to dig a compatible disc out of the "I'm sure this'll be useful one day" cupboard and he installed the OS afresh.

I then had to convince our scientists that it was just unfortunate timing on his part and not anything he did wrong.

I had the other way around, I supported some scientific software from a small company for years. Whenever there was a problem I couldn't solve, I'd phone and the switchboard would put me through to the head developer. I asked the product manger why they had seemed to have no one on support - he answered that if it was a simple problem then I'd have already solved it so they saved everyone's time by putting me though to the big guy. I decided to take that as a compliment.

Anyone trying to get sport kit to or from the UK would be wise to check out BA Business if it's in Europe. You get two 32KG bags which can include sports equipment, the budget airlines tend to charge a lot for each item of sports gear. The last time I flew to the UK with a bike, it was 50CHFs cheaper than going with Easyjet. Of course you also get access to the lunges etc (see icon)

My old work outsourced most of IT; they still had the physical machines in the UK. When there was a fault that might need to have the power button pushed or some hardware technicians babysat they used to get someone to hang around in the data centre - she usually occupied the time knitting and getting paid for it.
