Even household name companies, normally associated with Switzerland, have their tech centers in Barcelona, Bulgaria, or Bangalore. Simply NOT possible to find anything with a senior role, despite higher degree, industry certs, experience and 3 languages, two passports.

The big companies seem to be going through yearly large-scale job cuts. This means there are 100s of applicants for every position and the employers tend to want and get a 100% fit.

In the end, the network came through but job boards are currently a wasteland.

Sadly this is true.

I have a network here and it got me jobs, I have no idea how someone young could start off.

Most of the companies who use Workday are large ones where if they sneeze hundreds or even thousands apply for it - having fewer applicants makes recruitment easier for them.

From a candidate's point of view things are less rosy though.

XP Professional / XP Home were different from that PoV. Professional could be joined to a domain etc, whereas home had pretty no concept of security. Things got a lot better with >=SP2 though.

I remember a colleague used to share a load of MP3 from her workstation which we all used to listen to in WinAmp (yeah it was a while ago). Someone in IT sent a strongly worded email telling her not to share copyrighted material etc.

The self-same IT came running over and asked her to leave it up for 24 hours as she had some good stuff he wanted.

A relative was a headmaster of a school in a run-down area so they got lots of "kids" roaming the area. The cops would call him if they couldn't get hold of the caretaker and he'd have to go and check it all out by themselves. I have no idea what would have happened to caretaker or headmaster if some miscreants were still there and up to no good.
