HPE's Eng Lim Goh on spaceborne computers, NASA medals – and AI at the final frontier

Re: "process data at the source"

Some places have a data volume that's too high for this, for example CERN only keep a subset of their data after processing and the Square Kilometre Array will have even bigger data volumes. In my field we no longer keep the image files from the sequencers and instead regard the sequences as the raw data.

SGI?

It would have been nice if El Reg had enquired about what on earth* happened to SGI once HPE bought them and arguably more importantly if Cray will seem to disappear too...

Computer vision is being used in job interviews: Oh dear, facial tracking technology is being used to monitor candidates’ faces during job interviews for the first time in the UK.

Unilever is apparently rolling out the technology to screen potential employees answering interview questions, via a camera on a mobile phone or a laptop.

RAF pilot seconded to Virgin Orbit for three years of launching rockets from a 747

Korev Silver badge
Mushroom

The UK is dead keen to lure Virgin Orbit and its converted Boeing 747 spacecraft launcher, Cosmic Girl, from their current US base to Newquay Airport in Cornwall (formerly RAF St Mawgan and proud owners of one of the widest runways in Britain).

RAF St Mawgan is still there, it's just not a flying base anymore. It's probably quite a sneaky move for the RAF to pass on the costs of running the runways etc. to the civilian world and keep using it. If they ever need to rebuild the RAF then presumably they could reoccupy the base.

It's been a while since the RAF / US Navy had some of these at St Mawgan -->

Re: Cornwall?

>What would surely make more sense would be to use an airport rather nearer to Sutherland (in Scotland) where our lovely new spaceport is planned, in order to help build a critical mass of jobs and skilled workers?

Cornwall is desperate for decent, skilled jobs too. It's one of the poorest regions in Europe, to the point that it qualifies for Objective One funding from the EU.

The biggest benefit I find is having a fair chance to get your hand luggage (a laptop bag in my case) in the overhead locker at least somewhere close to where your seat is.

Or actually in the cabin at all...

I normally buy Speedy Boarding because it means you can take a second smaller bag in the cabin. In my case my camera, lenses and other toys are in the locker and the my much smaller bag is for clothes.
