Electron has a number of drawbacks – builds tend to be large and memory-hungry, for instance – but the advantage of being able to use familiar web technology to create a single code-base that can generate builds for macOS, Linux, and Windows outweighs the downsides in many cases.
The downsides are pretty much all for the end user as their machine's RAM & disc get swallowed; the developer gets a much easier life in return.

"When we were looking at designing front-end applications, they only needed a small subset of that data," he said. "Most of them need the address and the lat/long, for example. Sending back all the information we have about every building every time would be very, very onerous. And so for us, it made sense to use GraphQL where the client could select exactly what data they wanted to get back."
Potential dumb question: this sounds like exactly the kind of the thing that any SQL database could handle well; what advantages are there to use GraphQL or similar in this context?

We had someone take out an entire subnet doing the same only with a D-link.
Sadly we never tracked down the culprit or else it could have appeared in a BOFH episode one day -->
