Microsoft Teams gets off to a wobbly start as the world and its cat starts working from home

Korev Silver badge

After all, the latest tweet from the Microsoft Teams social media orifice exhorts users to make the jump from Skype for Business to the platform. The words "frying pan" and "fire" spring effortlessly to mind rather than the "seamless transition" hoped for.

I had the (dis)pleasure of attending two Skype for Business meetings today which both had significant problems too. I wasn't sure if it was SfB's normal flakiness or overload.

Re: Who was really at fault?

I used to work on a Pharma site where in addition to research and development there was also a factory; the data centre used to get cleaned by the techies as the list of people allowed in was tiny.

Re: Not just cleaners

Had a clown laying new vinyl in corridors including the one outside the computer room. Which contained a VAX and a couple of Novell (I'm that old) servers.

JUST stopped him unplugging the VAX to plug in some power tool - his hand was on the plug. I showed him a more appropriate power socket, but his extension cord wouldn't reach it.

I'm confused is the Vax the server or the vacuum cleaner?

You have to socket to them or they'll do it again

Conversely, the "Trust us" stamp is looking quite tarnished. Heart Bleed[sic], Spectre and the very latest Intel Management Engine vulnerability are all either signs of verification failure or, even worse, problems that came out during verification but were too expensive to fix and too dangerous to admit.

I can see a doomsday scenario where one day a vulnerability is found which is unfixable and easily exploitable which would kill an entire CPU line. Almost all modern CPUs are vulnerable to some of these side channel attacks; but Intel's chips seem much worse than any other.

Re: Good

Yeah, here in Switzerland the banks are backing a mobile app called Twint which uses some frankenhybrid of NFC & bluetooth for payments in shops etc. The problem is that it's rather unreliable when you pay so most people seem to prefer the convenience of the contactless payments instead. The largest bank here, UBS refuse to support Applepay in the hope that people will use Twint instead - we'll see who wins in the long run.
