I have learned to be extremely careful with irreplaceable parts while sitting at it. Not because the irreplacable parts are fragile, just because finding anything dropped is an exciting challenge all by itself.
I bought a Magnetic bowl for repairing my bike for this reason. It's so useful I use it whilst working on other stuff too.

There's a possibility that if you've had this kind of device before then it may not be possible to have a new one fitted as the brain was damaged by the first. That's the kind of question I'd ask if I had the misfortune to need one.

I remember getting a bunch of new workstations for some computational chemists; one by one, the graphics cards would fail and would be replaced under warranty. I suggested to the vendor that maybe replacing all the the remaining cards would save both them and us time - they said no. So over the next few months the remaining cards failed...
