Back in that era I was living with a teacher. She was given a cheap laptop by her school which was rather slow. The school would only pay for a minuscule bit of IT support and apparently the guy was very unhelpful so she asked me to see what I could do.
I looked at her machine and it only had 512MB of RAM and was paging constantly, so I suggested trying popping a bit more memory in and unsurprisingly it was much nicer to use. Word got out amongst the other teachers so they went and spent their own money on making their computers usable!

He can't have been a true manager or he'd have ordered the fastest workstation available and then done nothing with it apart from a bit of email and Powerpoint on it...

I upset the leaders of my Scout troop as we were do an exercise in causality extraction and I realised that going to the Scout Hut and pretending to dial 999 (before mobile phones were common) was a perfectly acceptable course of action. Streaming showed that if you give people the opportunity to view/listen to stuff in a convenient way for not a lot of money then suddenly Bittorrent etc become a lot less attractive.
As the market for streaming video becomes more fragmented and you need a zillion subscriptions to view everything[0], maybe people will rediscover piracy...

From what I've seen, Nvidia have spent the last decade and a bit building up their market in GP-GPUs and did a good job by providing CUDA and the rest of the Ecosystem for HPC which turns out to be very useful for AI too. One of the main problems seems to be that Intel (especially) and ATI AMD don't seem to be able to produce anything that people want to use...

While the consequences of a successful exploit could be dire, actually doing so would take some patience. According to OpenSSH and its release notes for version 9.8, which includes the fix for CVE-2024-6387, in lab conditions it took between six and eight hours to beat the race condition.
I'm not sure I agree, you could finish work for the day and your machine is pwned by the time you start work the next day....
