Years ago I setup an alerting system for a lab which I dutifully documented in the usual place. Eventually the bean counters had their way and the site shut, the techies there started shutting stuff down and then the alerts started - quite a few of them. They then asked where the documentation was on how to disable it, I responded that it was on the SharePoint server (where it was supposed to be). It turns out that SharePoint server was the first thing they'd decommissioned...

I've just had the pleasure of working with an exceptional programmer in Pune. I've seen programmers in the West make an utter cockup of simple things. You can't really stereotype on the basis of neither someone's nationality or location.

A few years ago we had a guy from a storage vendor in, he spoke to a load of developers about the wonders of their object stores by on drawing on a flipchart and had pretty much sold their system by the time he was done.

I did that for a bit, but found it to be really slow to do reports. The reports in the Pihole are much nicer too.

I managed to screw up my OPNSense firewall at the weekend, luckily I had configuration backups saved which meant I didn't have to create the VLANs and firewall rules from zero.

The only problem was that they had an old PiHole IP address and it took me ages to figure out why I couldn't access the Internet (see icon)

I had a data scientist call me in a panic as he had an "urgent" report and he'd lost his code. I pottered over and found that it was under version control which made me think it'd be easy - turns out he'd not pushed a commit in six months...

I showed him how to access the nightly snapshots and was suitably rewarded -->

One weird thing (living in Switzerland as an expat) is that everything is invoiced, often they arrive via the post or email and you scan them in and pay them. This has the "helpful" side effect of training people to just scan and pay without thinking too much...

TBH I'm amazed that there's not more fraud of this type here.

I once lost a nipple into the rim whilst replacing a spoke on a bike wheel. No matter what I tried I couldn't get it out. A few months later said rim cracked, I wonder if the stray nipple caused the damage.

Sadly they're optimising GPUs for half precision which means that a lot of more traditional codes won't run as well. In HPC land Nvidia GPUs only became useful once they'd introduced double precision.

On paper, the B200 is capable of churning out 9 petaFLOPS of sparse FP8 performance, and is rated for a kilowatt of power and heat. The 1.2 kW GPUs found in Nvidia's flagship GB200, on the other hand, are each capable of churning out 10 petaFLOPS at the same precision.

My old work signed agreements with caterers that would often add an order of magnitude to the cost compared to just walking into a shop and buying it yourself. I can see how Intel might have done the same.
