Last autumn I was told to document everything for a yet-to-be-employed developer to take over my stuff. I started a new job elsewhere just in time for mass-redundancies and the first company were dumb nice and had me back. I was both annoyed with how much I'd forgotten and pleased with how well I documented.

Back in the Beforetimes when I had a real job, we wanted to organise our lab's liquid Nitrogen tanks what with that Human Tissue and Embryology Act incoming an all that. A database, but a load of paper was the way to go, but the problem we had was getting labels than would survive in liquid Nitrogen. The black permanent marker pens were fine though (Sharpies weren't really in the UK at that point).

At the same place as above, there was an Sun x86 box running Oracle that would lose its connection to the SAN whilst doing backups. My Monday morning was then spent bringing it all back as the normal DB guy had a long commute in.

Oddly enough we soon repurposed that box

I used to run an Isilon setup for HPC, the database guy had to backup to the Isilon first as no other storage system we had was fast enough to feed the tape library
