The obvious long-term practical application for the laser would be aboard a warship, and perhaps one of the first aged Type 23 frigates to be retired in the next five or six years could have her hull life extended to serve as a trials platform.
At the usual rates of defence procurement, I'm not sure if the RN will be able to replace those frigates by then - do you think we could borrow HMS Victory?

Although Access doesn't scale and has funny SQL; an Access DB is often light years better than the Excel "databases" they normally replace. Moreover, if your users have made an Access DB then it's more likely to be in a structure that can migrated to Postgres, Oracle etc reasonably easily.

Re: 'up'grading is overrated
It's a fair bet that a FAIR analysis of the situation might prove that a commercial flavor of Linux, if you MUST "up"grade the OS, would be a lower cost, longer term, TOTAL solution.
Rolling out a Linux variant wouldn't solve the problem of having running an obsolete unsupported OS in the long run if the NHS Trusts didn't upgrade the OS. They'd be having the same problem if they had a fleet of RHEL < 5 machines.
Getting rid of legacy IT can be difficult if some essential software or hardware is not ported to a newer platform; we do still have some productive SGI workstations at my work....

Virtualisation?
As CPU core count, RAM, SDD etc. get rapidly bigger/cheaper compared to the demands put on them by $OS etc. you can fit more and more VMs onto a single server. Maybe this is another reason why people are buying fewer servers. At my work now, most of the physical servers are HPC nodes.

This would be very easy to test... PCR (selectively amplify) the 16S gene (conserved through all bacteria), sequence them, put the sequences through something like Mothur (identifies bacterial sequences) and crunch the stats on the population etc. The amusing thing in this context is that one of the R packages for "community analysis" is called Vegan...
