There are enough Linux worms and exploits around to not guarantee security. It's feasible that a bug in an NFS implementation could have a similar to effect to the one in Windows' CIFS that "caused" this. You'd also need to get the vendors to release their software for Linux.
Linux is my OS of choice at work (HPC), but I can see that it's not appropriate for all scenarios at the moment.

Senior people still have a huge sense of entitlement and fail to see how it might be a problem.
20k UK Ambulances on "blue light" calls got speeding tickets from cameras. Some of the "trusts" were fined £160k a year and had had someone spend a week per month appealing the tickets. An enormous waste of time and money that could be better spent on caring for patients.

Probably more than you think. Remember "Pentium inside, can't divide" - Intel chips are ubiquitous these days. Moreover, moving off Atom to ARM, MIPS etc. would require at the minimum a recompile and in reality a lot more coding effort.

The scenarios described in the article are why I use a Chromecast. In addition trying to navigate the Samsung software using a remote control is a PITA.
