This marks the first time a German team has won a major performance award on their home soil and is likely to result in the declaration of a national holiday featuring parades and a statue raising in their home town of Nuremburg.
Why the sarcasm? This is quite an achievement for some students; >99% of the readership of this Esteemed Organ wouldn't be capable of doing this.
I once "owned" some software with an Escrow agreement. The software's yearly licence was just over a million GBP, the Escrow was a condition of the agreement, I believe it cost the vendor just over a thousand (the Escrow company would notify us when it was a paid and b they got source code); I make that 0.1% of the licence cost.
Hopefully most of their applications are provided using terminal servers etc. so the data is in a physically-secure place (no laptops to be pinched or left in taxis). There is no reason why NHSbuntu couldn't be used as a thin client in this case regardless of which OS is used in the backend.
At university and in my first job (also at a uni) is was normal for "normal" undergraduates and staff to log in via telnet* and use Pine. I suspect that if you showed them a terminal now they'd refuse to use it as it's "too hard".
*Showing my age here, wasn't it nice to not have to care about security as much

I built our first test compute cluster in the end of the office out some old boxes. Our scientists' desire for compute was insatiable so I managed to lay my hands on some Pentium D machines which ran hit. Let's just say that you didn't need Ganglia to monitor load, you just worked out home much like a hair dryer it sounded. We moved it pretty quickly to keep our colleagues sane.
