CPU cores haven't got much faster* recently, so you can build usefully fast clusters out of older gear. I guess in this instance it meant that their researchers could have a cluster that they otherwise wouldn't have had.

The university that I worked for a few years ago managed to get a cluster out of a well-known hardware vendor, but had the small problem of not having anywhere to put it. I was there for a couple of years and the hardware did nothing apart from sit in a storeroom.

These days servers have so much memory that they can hold the image in RAM which should lessen the load greatly; moreover the IB network should mean that the provisioning node(s) can heave out the images quickly.

The DGX-1 is the only machine of its type around at the moment. Sure, you can build your own machine with five GPU cards, but you still want get close to the performance go the DGX-1 due to its custom bus features allowing date to be transferred to the GPU cards at impressive speeds.

Cray sell a box with eight P100s and NVlink too. I'm sure other vendors are getting in on the party.

The Titan-X is a consumer card aimed at gamers; the DGX-1 has cards designed for compute servers which cost rather a lot more money. There's also Infiniband and NV-link.

The state of the art in HPC is about eight or so GPU and beyond that you need to give someone like Cray a ring. Even then, they can't go much beyond that without all sorts of bus contention...

Full marks to BUPA for coming clean and notifying the affected people. Getting the cops involved would possibly lower the chance of a company 'fessing up to this kind of breach. I guess there are no right answers here.

In Europe I'd say the Dutch, the Swiss and the Scandinavian countries could have both the motivation and the skills to field an anti carrier weapon.

Why the Swiss? Switzerland is 100s of KM from the nearest coast and I assume that in a war situation the Italians would object to a carrier that near to their coast too.

I imagine that most bot nets would have PCs with Intel integrated graphics rather than a discrete GPU. I suspect that if you're keen enough on PCs to want a decent GPU then you'll know about patching, anti-virus etc.
