Which DNA analysis problems? I ask because I support scientists doing this stuff (and bioinformatics is a bit of a hobby*) and almost everything bioinformaticians do is running on x86. We do use GPUs but for other tasks.

Any substantial change of the UI will confuse the end users, no matter how intelligent or knowledgeable they are. It is the job the IT department to make sure end users understand the changes, and to walk the users through the changes if they don't.
When we migrated from Notes to Outlook we had loads of IT guys run around in red T shirts for this very reason. Some of the server guys even actually liked talking to humans for a bit :)
Assuming this is for the boffinery at Hanslope Park then they may still have a lot of very specialist instrumentation which is driven by PCs running an older OS whose software breaks when the underlying OS is upgraded.
We have a number of PCs like this at $EMPLOYER which are firewalled off etc from the rest of the network.
If this is to believed then wages in the UK are so low that it's cheaper to use humans rather than automatic car washes, resulting in a halving of the number of carwashes.
If I'm ever brought into A&E in a "mostly dead" state; then I'd really hope that the medics aren't "applying for an exception" to get access to my records.
Seriously, I can imagine that governing this kind of access would become a huge overhead in terms of time to implement and maintain the systems and fast become a huge PITA when HCPs can't access the records they need to ("Sorry Mr John Smith we have three people with that name and the clerk got the wrong one").
But is it possible that natural human DNA could also accidentally take down a biological research computer system someday?
I've been told that a PromethION sequencer will output 500MB/s*, so that'd probably take down many networks and storage systems.

The only place that worries me is exactly what this article states - high-end servers and write-heavy tasks, where SSDs are not well suited and everything has to be send over a Gbit connection anyway (so why rush?).
What about things like databases where although the traffic isn't high, latency is critically important?
According to the Vulture Central Standards Bureau shouldn't this be 21.2778 Hiltons? BTW does anyone know the history of this criminally-overlooked unit?
