I did something similar. I had a tonne of computer jobs to run on HPC. There was scheduled downtime, so the admins fiddled with the queues but in a dumb way to stop new jobs that would then have to be killed. As a former HPC admin, I knew enough to look at what they'd done and then tweaked my jobs to run on an otherwise empty cluster; the said jobs were all done before the downtime.

Sounds like the kind of thing you'd love to run on an AWS account or service. I assume as it's something so obvious that they'd have already implemented it right?

My ISP here in Switzerland, has gone to court a few times to make the legacy monopoly behave.. It's a shame the same thing doesn't happen in the UK too. The end result of this is that you can get proper fibre (ie not XGS-PON) at up to symmetric 25Gb.

Re: What is it with managers and training costs?

Where I used to work the powers that be kept reminding us we had a training budget and then berating us for not using it.

The conversation went something like

BOFH: "There's a course here that I'd like to do"

PHB: "Sorry we don't have any money in the travel budget to send you"

Fast forward a month or so:

PHB: "Don't forget you have money in the training budget"

Re: Flawed business continuity plan…

There was a fire at somewhere I used to work, the emergency plans mostly worked really well and the important people setup camp in the DR room in a different building. The only big problem was that people had gone from BlackBerrys and Nokias to iPhones and you can imagine which cables were in the said room. The big bosses were using their phones a lot for obvious reasons, so towards the end of the day getting hold of iPhone cables suddenly became one of the most important tasks.
