Make America, wait, what again? US Army may need foreign weapons to keep up

I just watched that yesterday! The Bradley really IS a piece of work! And they're STILL spending money to upgrade it.

Re: Military-industrial 101

While you have a point about the Leopard, ships, and most everything, a lot of the European combat vehicles are made by subsidiaries of a US corporation. Taxes to Uncle Sam (profits to shareholders). (Even the Spanish division takes a German Leopard and converts it into a Spanish one... or is it builds it from licensed design -- I forget.)

Re: Military-industrial 101

Regarding the M1 Abram's 120 mm smoothbore main gun: I believe the US licenses the design and builds their special version in New York state. American workers, after all.

Re: Beware the Military-Industrial-Congressional Complex

F-35? I though we were talking GROUND combat systems. Those of us in the engineering trenches are doing what we can with Abrams and Stryker upgrades, and rather cheaply, thank you. (Although I will admit we BLED cash on the Future Combat Systems Manned Ground Vehicle program, and some were proud of that.)

Some history from the last 2-3 decades: European Piranha 8x8 --> Canadian LAV --> US Stryker. And all (now) owned by the same US corporation. Taxes go to Uncle Sam -- that makes it okay, right? (Never mind it's publicly traded so profits go to ALL shareholders, regardless of country.)

Dealing with other people?

If you want to play THOSE kinds of games, you can't avoid that other people suck sometimes.

More than just a great asset

I live and work "right" down the road from a US ANG facility (Selfridge Air National Guard) that has A10s. Don't see them training much -- usually the KC Stratotankers -- but they're there (and we can certainly HEAR them). Local businesses thrive on lunch customers from the base. To the country, A10s mean defense capability; to our state/county, they mean JOBS, and our federal representatives are trying their best to keep said A10s and associated jobs.

Go Team Selfridge!

(Check my handle -- this issue is even closer to home when you regard my line of work.)

"If God exists why did he bother with mankind ?"

Reminds me of Psalm 8, verse 4: " What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" (KJV)

So glad I rolled the missus' phone back to 9.3.5 without the iMessage preview (or any of the other "new" stuff that bothered her).

For some reason, although mine is usually the first to update, it didn't care until a day later, and is still waiting. (Ha! Not gonna' let you update iOS this time!)

Re: "weather triggered the ... alarm"

When my brother was at university, he had a few classes in a relatively new building. He complained it was all-too-frequently having false fire alarms during his classes.

And the department it housed? Electrical Engineering & Computer Science.

(Obviously it wasn't uni professors wiring alarm systems. (Grad students, maybe...) Builders are crap unless you're my brother-in-law -- not crap; just expensive, because "you get what you pay for" and he never uses cheap materials.)

Re: We [don't] have WOW

Wow needs to stop worrying about tech. If providing GbE is all about growing the company, why can't I get them in Macomb Township, Michigan, 10 years after buying a house and first asking them?

Thankfully I've had nothing but good** with U-verse and probably wouldn't change anyway, unless we move.

** Except I'm not paying ungodly amounts for download speeds I don't need just to get faster uploads for sharing the family photo albums. I understand network architectures are laid out & optimized for the expected traffic patterns (mass downloads) but is it really so hard to get anything higher than 1.5 Mbps upstream?
