How do you like them Apples? Cook drops 'record' 30 times* on conf call as iPhone sales up, services up, wearables up

Re: 480 million services subscribers

Subscribers have one or more subscriptions. I have about half a dozen Apple subscriptions, but only one Apple ID. Some are free for some period, others are billed monthly or annually. Lot’s of room for spin here.

This is not the cloud you're looking for.... Oracle's JEDI mind tricks work as Trump forces $10bn IT project to drop out of warp

Re: a really stupid way to run a country?

I haven’t seen any evidence of this contracting being fixed, but I’m open to seeing some.

I would prefer they split the contract between Amazon and Microsoft. Oracle and IBM couldn’t meet the requirements of this contracting in their wildest dreams.

As for CapitalOne, no, that’s simply not the case. The hack took place on CapitalOne app//web servers that were running on AWS infra. This was entirely on CapitalOne, and they have said as much publicly.

Re: “Everyone recognises that customers want technology delivered as a service,

This is argument might have held water 5 years ago, but not today. The technology advantages of public cloud are myriad, the costs are significantly lower than purchasing on-Prem HW, and the ability to scale-up and down, almost infinitely, simply isn’t available on-Prem. As for lock-in, thIs just isn’t the case. Yes, there are data transfer fees to move out of the cloud, but once you’ve gone cloud you’ll never go back, for all of the reasons stated above. On-Prem HW vendors like HPE are dying a death of a thousand cuts. It’s the end of an era.

I think Oracle were good at sales back in the day. Most of their best talent left years ago. Now it’s mostly fat cat order takers and the odd youngster who didn’t know what he was signing up for. Google would do well to look elsewhere for enterprise sales talent.

WTF?

Desperate Schizophrenic

This is a truly desperate move for HPE, but makes sense for Nutanix. My question for this motley crew: How is it that Simplivity hasn’t developed their own hypervisor by now? Simplivity had, and still has, a solid and loyal base of customers. What an awful message to send them.

Re: Good plan

Something new has come along. So long ago that it’s no longer new. The young and hip moved on from FB to SC ions ago. FB is now dominated by the 40+ crowd, of which I am a member, emphasis on the +. FB isn’t a monopoly, but it is a menace and could do with a healthy dose of regulation.

The powers of the POTUS are, thank heavens, quite limited, but I believe that someone like EW could, nevertheless get a lot done in this regard.

Why single vendor?

Regardless of which cloud gets selected in this government bid, I don’t understand why Uncle Sam would go with only a single vendor. Is it really so tough to build a redundant cloud architecture? Even if it is difficult, why not make that part of the deal, by requiring that the two vendors selected work together to create an integrated solution? Furthermore, you could have a 3rd vendor in “backup mode” if either of the two selected fail to meet their obligations. There are numerous variations on this theme, including hiring a 3rd party (like a GSI) to do the cross-cloud integration. Single source is a bad idea financially and also from a military perspective.
