Artificial intelligence is a liability

Alpc

Re: Watson

"A truly intelligent race would probably approach AI with extreme caution. Humanity however .... Best fasten your seatbelts folks." Spot on, alas.

And a truly intelligent race wouldn't use AI in weapon systems, at least not initially. The ride going to be very bumpy. Question is, will humanity survive? If it does not, it will be because it did not deserve to.

The V1 never carried many passengers, either.

I guess 100% automated planes are still a while off.

Re: Interesting

Ah the Farne Islands! Worth a visit but avoid it when the Terns have chicks - the blighters attack all and sundry with their sharp beaks. I remember one guy with a bleeding forehead after a Tern assault.

Fond memories as I used to live in the area. For reasons unknown, my parents never took my brother and myself to Cragside. A pity.

Prefer the current version

Personally, I'm quite happy with the current site layout. Only minor problem is that articles tend to be repeated on the home page when I scroll down. Aside from that, seems fine. Article tags such as On-Call etc are really handy for finding what I want to read. Tried the new layout and went back to the old one. My tuppence worth.

Arresting times past

Many moons past I nearly got myself arrested for taking photos in the Milton Keynes court complex. Nobody told me I couldn't take photos - I was carrying out an inspection as part of my work. Some magistrate, clerk or other had seen me snapping away which led to my being told off. The next time I had to inspect a court, I didn't take a camera. You live, you learn.

Potato, potato. Toma6to, I'm going to kill you... How a typo can turn an AI translator against us

Re: Rubbish in, rubbish out...

In my experience - I do quite a bit of translating - Google translate is OK for English to Italian and vice versa but the results do need reviewing and are rarely, if ever, "production" ready. You really need to know both languages in depth to be able to produce translations that are accurate and well written. The AI is getting better but it's far from perfect. Maybe it will be in 10 or so years.

Rubbish in, rubbish out...

...at the end of the day, AI is only as good as the human programmers and algorithm creators. Humans make mistakes and, as a consequence, so will AI, unless humans cover all scenarios. But is this possible? Could AI end up creating its own scenarios?

Re: Facepalm! Windows 10 1607 Aniversary Update "Defer Updates" setting is back to front.

Hey thanks Adam - by deferring the feature update, I've finally managed to get my Surface Pro 4 running the 1703 update.

Seems you may well be right. Microsoft does indeed appear to have messed up.

Would love to know how many others are still stuck in the Win 10 1607 black (or maybe blue) hole because of this. Well, now there's a way for them to get Win 10 1703.

PS ElReg, this could be a story for you.

Re: Facepalm! Windows 10 1607 Aniversary Update "Defer Updates" setting is back to front.

Can't believe this. Followed your instructions and Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703 has, finally, shown up! Will the install complete? Don't know yet. I'll be back!

Re: Facepalm! Windows 10 1607 Aniversary Update "Defer Updates" setting is back to front.

Have been wondering why my Surface Pro 4 has not got the Creators Update even if my aging HP laptop has. Will try this, see what happens and come back if it works (or doesn't).

Not a system update but Android Google app / services updates. I got a recent BlackBerry security update but it caused no problems. Android Messenger was updated, again, today. I don't use it.

Happened Again¡

Have just got another message thus evening on my Android mobile telling me my password needs updating. Weird, as have just done it via laptop.

I also got a mail from the big G telling me about, my, password update!

What's up?

Alpc

Thought this was odd. Happened to me too. Tried to change password via mobile but Google didn't like it. Managed to change it via desktop. Then logged in with new PW on mobile and Google message went away.

Maybe it has something to do with a recent Android update?

Surface Book nightmare: Microsoft won't fix 'Sleep of Death' bug

Alpc

Either Microsoft sorts this out or Apple for me next time

Have had Surface Pro 4 for a few months. Ended up with hot bag syndrome a couple of times and the thing fell asleep and locked up until power button pressed and held to reboot system.

I don't put the thing to sleep much and tend to turn it off fully - to avoid the sleep of death issue so haven't had too many problems. When the thing does play up, detaching and reattaching the keyboard sometimes works.

I've kind of come to regard the Surface as a keyboard-less laptop and not a tablet. Battery life is not too good and nowhere near as good as my iPad mini - which wakes up unfailingly when I hit its button.

Despite the hassles, I like the Surface Pro owing to its ability to use real windows - something which Android and iDevices can't do.

Hopefully Microsoft will sort this sleep issue out or else I'll go for a MacBook Air next time. In fact, I kind of wished I'd opted for a MacBook Air anyway - I'd miss the touchscreen though.
