'Data is the new oil': F-Secure man on cartels, disinformation and IoT

Already got solar powered bins that email the council when they need emptying. Combine with driverless bin lorries? We'll have to invent some litter-bots to do some littering, otherwise humans will have very little purpose anymore :)

Do you think...

... they meant it was like Petya - because it affected the Master Boot Record?

Brit broke anti-terror law by refusing to cough up passwords to cops

B0rg

Not sure how asking a question warrants a down vote but - OK.

My actual question remains unanswered - regardless of method used or whether it's viable or not - is it legal for them to bypass your security and view information when you refuse to hand over the password?

Seems so for GCHQ with a warrant

Probably not for your typical customs official tho.

What does the law say about border staff circumventing things like password controls? Agree it's unlikely at present that there will be a good pen-tester employed at the border but... what if..

As a crap example an old Win95 lappy, they boot into command prompt and rename the *.pwl file and then login? Can't remember if that works on 95, anyway using DMA or similar to change the password. Legal / Not?

Have I just given them ideas? :-/

User thanked IT department for fast new server, but it had never left its box

My favourite when I used to work on the helpdesk was always 'the secret magic server trick' - user is on the phone with X problem, so I say "OK close Application X and then don't press any keys on the keyboard for a minute". Then I open Notepad on my machine and audibly mash a bunch of keys on the keyboard pretending to type something and say "OK, I've changed a setting on 'the server' - try opening X up again and let me know if it's working?" ~99% success rate "wow it's working fine now, thanks!!"

Cyber arm of UK spy agency left without PGP for four months

I don't geddit. We suspect the Chinese are spying on us because they are heavily embedded in our infrastructure, so instead of ditching them we just ask for reassurance that they're not spying on us?

Yes minister; the Chinese were doing such a good job of spying on our population already we asked if we could be let in on the intel too. It's much cheaper than re-inventing the wheel and compromising the networks ourselves!

Yah. Calling yourselves 'Deep Root Analytics' and then making idiotic statements that show your analytical skills to be about as 'deep' as a thin-crust pizza, can't be good for business.

I think I just heard Kevin Mitnick fall off his chair and roll around on the floor laughing his ass off.

Seriously though, can we fit Inspector Knacker with a stupidity jammer? At least that way he wouldn’t be breaching the wireless telegraphy act and the only collateral damage would be jamming other peoples’ weapons-grade moronic comments!
