Watch Waymo's totally driverless self-driving car cruise around, how the US military wants to use AI ethically, etc

froberts2

It doesn't matter. Any even slightly competent driver would have NOT turned left at the point that the other driver had pulled along side of them. The obvious assumption is that the 2nd driver had not realized that the lead car was turning left (even though it had indicated that fact), but was instead turning right.

The alternative assumption is that the 2nd driver was acting aggressively and attempting to overtake on the turn.

For either of those conclusions, proceeding to turn left at that point, especially after only a short wait, is hazardous and almost certainly the wrong action to take.

Reanimated Violin returns to scene with flashy XVS 8 array, and, er, AR app

Oh please, not the "customers need fewer servers and associated software licences to run the same applications" line again.

Almost every AFA vendor has claimed that, and when asked to prove it they all back-pedal because it simply can't be justified.

You lead the all-flash array market. And you, you, you, you, you and you...

Gartner's MQ is based around what the vendors tell Gartner, which means that the company that focuses the most on marketing, wins. And in this space, that's Pure Storage.

If Garner was to actually test any of the product, rather than simply believing what the vendors say, the results would be very different.

user-after-free()? How does that work?

Perhaps you meant use-after-free?

Pure: Let's be direct about attached storage. Hyperconvergence is not for us

Customer acquisition over profits only continues to work whilst you are still selling what your existing customers want to buy. At this time, it's not clear how long that will be the case with Pure Storage.

Management merge only

Around 1 month ago the top-level management for XtremIO and ScaleIO was put under a single person. This was geographic based - both products are based in the Tel Aviv area.

There are no plans to merge the two products in any other way.

Back-from-the-brink X-IO has a new, bright & shiny all-flash array

Re: Math is wrong on Effective Capacity

The article says "implying", which means The Register staff obviously came up with those numbers - but it's not surprising they got them wrong, not like you'd expect Register staff to know anything about data protection or how storage works, right?

Proprietary: Pure sticks to flash module design, becomes a direct flasher

The numbers don't add up...

183TB raw. Add in data protection, over-provisioning (which Pure has always done at the array level, but now needs to more than ever as they lose the added benefit of SSD over-provisioning), and other overheads and they lose probably close to half that. (~45% in the //m, //X will be at least the same, probably more)

Even if it's 100TB usable, that means they are counting a 10:1 data reduction to get to 1PB - almost double what they have claimed previously without any logic backing it.

Google mistakes the entire NHS for massive cyber-attacking botnet

NHS uses Zscaler, and these problems have plagued Zscaler for years.

It's easy to deliberately trigger this via a Zscaler node, and once you do everyone using that node will be either CAPTCHAed or blocked.

Happy 20th birthday to the RADIUS RFC

froberts2

20 years?

Cisco added support for RADIUS in February 1996 (IOS 11.1), and they were dragged there kicking and screaming as they preferred people to use their own TACACS (and later, TACACS+) protocols.

Perhaps my calculator is broken, but that sounds like more than 20 years to me...

I hope the birthday card you bought was a belated one.

The Violin...

Anyone hear the tiny violin playing in the background of their announcements...?

Give it 12 months and Nutanix will be the Violin of the HCI market.

2nd split doesn't help

Another reverse split doesn't help them, as they are also below the $50 Million market cap number which also triggers a delisting.

Re: Earwax

Having spent many an evening discussing this with Randal himself over a beer or two (and maybe even the occasional scotch), I can assure you that both your memory and the wikipedia article are... well... off the mark.

39.9%??

Seriously, did you guys all fail math?

Going from $4,393M to $5,297M is not 39.9% growth. I'm too lazy to work out what it is (that's your job, after all!), but it's not 39.9%
