BT chief says AI could deliver more job cuts, hints at Openreach sell-off

Volisios

Blue sky thinking to become future brown trouser moments...

More wishful thinking geared to 'shareholder value' improvement... heard it all before in my 45 year career with BT and Openreach before becoming an early leaver statistic myself.

What she doesn't comprehend is that engineers (both office and field) are invaluable when trying to resolve physical wiring/cabling issues or identifying misrecorded plant network records and making good a customers' difficulties brought about by underskilled staff or contractors blindly following AI instructions on works orders...

How does AI respond to to an allegedly reserved spare circuit that actually carries an operational service? - it denies the working service exists and thereby creates a problem for the existing service user; An experienced technician questions the instructions and takes time to update the network records and obtain a corrected route.

Been there, seen it, done it, and no amount of management speak will alter the degree of circuit record errors already existing in the system. AI won't fix that, engineers will - with AI playing a minor role.

No matter what area of the political spectrum you support, introducing an unnecessary extra cloud of supersonic shrapnel into near-earth orbit has got to be a pretty dumb-ass thing to do... one can only hope it comes back to bite future projects of those responsible, rather than any other spacefarers who happen to encounter it.

Zuck says Facebook made an 'operational mistake' in not taking down US militia page mid-protests. TBH the whole social network is a mistake

There seems to me to be different levels of responsibility that need to be addressed here. On the one hand FB as it is providing the platform for the posters should be monitoring what is published and selectively removing content that is unreasonable. I guess the volume of what is posted globally hourly makes this a very difficult goal, but the moment complaints are made regarding a specific post that should be considered a clue where to focus attention.

Ultimately the content and context of posts are the responsibility of the posters - a few successful prosecutions in individual accountability wouldn't go amiss.

Drones are ok but...

If it's all the same I'd still like my aircraft to avoid sucking 1kg of someone's toy into an engine at a critical moment of take-off or landing, thank you.
