Sneaky Gugi banking trojan sidesteps Android OS security barricades

Nostromov

Meh, who reads (and understands) app permissions when installing something... Too many request too many, anyway - it's, basically, not possible to -really- have anything on the phone, if we're looking from a security standpoint (but, really :))

Anyway, I'm GLAD that this is happening... Hopefully, maybe, there will be a realization that: 1) it's completely idiotic for the mobile service provider to distribute updates for the Android OS (should be done from trusted. open, repositories - not unlike Windows Update, but 100 times better) and 2) all systems must be "rooted", it's as simple as that - so that users could install firewalls and all kinds of security software - a "hosts" file, a whole bunch of programs which are needed.

^^ Yeah (I know), it's doubtful and never gonna happen, fat chance, LOL! xD

Lexus cars suffer Purple Screen of Death – code bug turns the air blue

There's a "Simple solution, buy American" YouTube comment - however, I'm 99% sure that the newest Corvette (just as an example!), one which would be packed with electronics, will have just as many issues - if not moar, meh.

It's what they do, the manufacturers, benefits are all-around: spare-parts for sale, aftermarket (parts and components) production, creating some jobs and-what-not - only, most of it will come out of our pocket, blah (yes, obviously not - when there's a recall, or something :))

Anywho, why can't they stop - OK, you make some nice micro-engineered valves & a computer to run 'em and, for example, airbags will no longer kill us in case of an accident, cool; BUT, who the HECK needs lasers to scan the road and those, new, stupid <span class="strike">LED</span> lights (for retards) that auto-adjust according to what's on the road...

$1000 when something breaks and there are, literally, dozens-upon-dozens of things (cameras, parking sensors and even (!) more, besides the aforementioned) which can malfunction and does stop working - if eventually, or whatever.

Even more annoyingly, it's Toyota in question and in recent decades they've been (always) pushing their prices up and up, setting ridiculous prices in order to maximize profits - completely defeating the whole purpose of a Japanese car.

^^ Wasn't that long ago when we had the cheaper (than the rest) Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda cars... These days, thanks to the "Yaris", we're paying for their recycled metal almost as much as BMWs cost (which, btw., are also doing God-knows-what in order to stay competitive, heh.)

AND, ofc., I (really) can't understand WHY anyone would buy a Toyota, Lexus, when there's Opel, Ford, Audi, even several Korean brands and so on and so forth (kinda too many which beat 'em hands-down in terms of price, fuel-economy and just about everything else, to list).

I guess people must enjoy having to pay $200 for a spare car-tire rim, when they could get the same replacement part, from Ford for example, for -like- $60, or something, blah.

@ adnim

That's funny, also... Including the "[..] failed integration by 2018". Like, sorry how we have to break it to you, but: you got hustled, LOL *does the Micro$oft you-got-mail dance*

Re: Isn't it sweet...

Blah, newsflash... Supposedly the other "trusted" applications, where every single one of them will -surely- have a disclaimer saying how they could destroy us at any point and nobody on this planet can do anything about it - if we accept, install... Those apps are fine, then, right (lolz).

The Android approach is, just, fundamentally flawed - giving all sorts of permissions, to whatever (and whoever, heh.) in order for anything to function. It's insane and daily we see celebrities' pictures hacked - surely teh banks are swamped with people having their money stolen, only because their kid scanned a QR code, or whatever - phone bills going through the roof, for unknown reasons and so on & so forth.

^^ Just because people reading The Register have a clue - it says nothing about the rest of the world and millions of Android (L) users

Re: Isn't it sweet...

Wait, what... People have down-voted Bob 18's comment - for, what? :D

Android is terrible, without a rooted system and a whole bunch of tools (including a carefully managed rule-based firewall): shouldn't -really- trust and use any applications - which, everyone does it by default, which is ridiculous, hehe. xD

Re: Isn't it sweet...

IMO, there are different ways of lookin' @it, for example: when I go to my bank (Banca Intesa, Italian bank), they regularly inform me that they have an online service and would I like to enable E-banking...

Only the first time I had inquired about it, went to their portal - to see how it was done via teh MSIE Internet Exploder and some BHOs (& maybe certificates, can't -really- remember, but prolly not). These days, it *has* been updated to work with Firefox and other browsers - using Java; However, there will be (some) problems for whoever has installed 32-bit and 64-bit Java, on their x64 Windows - using a, regular, 32-bit browser.

*the possibilities, there, are endless really - just taking these manifestations into account (you know, the system responds to errors, with generous feedback; then, there is more than one path to take and so on - it could be wonderful, hehe)

The decision was and is quite simple. This kind of a system *can* be used and its coding is acceptable, but only a madman would enable and use their E-banking service. So, depends how you look at it: you can keep your money safe, or some people like to gamble - for convenience purposes, right...

You, just, don't (do not) keep your database online - if you'd like it to stay secure; it's, really, simple. :)

^^ Things which ARE put online... Shouldn't be made by children (which is what happens, on regular basis; err, in fact, kids would do it better, LOL)
