Official: Microsoft's 'Get Windows 10' nagware to vanish from PCs in July

Re: Inevitably...

>> We'll have the usual suspects whining that evil MSFT has taken away the chance for a freebie. <<

-J J Carter.

Once again, Windows 10 was never a 'freebie'.

People who 'upgraded' have already paid for their Windows 7 or Windows 8 licence.

Its like the good old "2 for the price of 1" offer. They say you pay for one and get one free.

But, I look at it as you get 2 for half price. Nothing is actually free.

Windows 10 free upgrade offer ends on July 29th

Nagging will end soon...

How nice of MS to offer to remove the WINDOWS 10 MALWARE they've put on millions of computers worldwide. I'm still surprised that no-one has sued them yet.

Thank goodness I don't need to deal with their BS anymore.

More BS from MS

>> In other words, if you're running an office of Pro machines to keep costs down, here's a little encouragement to upgrade to Enterprise. Kerr-ching.<<

More of an encouragement to stay with Windows 7. Or, move to Linux.

That would definitely keep costs (and unnecessary stress) down.

Now they've really gone too far

Lucky I don't have my Atari 2600 and Atari 400 anymore, they would probably be next.

Do what I've done

>> "Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10. Gosh, what should I do?" Slater asked sarcastically <<

Clean install. Dual boot - Windows 7 and Linux Mint.

Windows 7 at SP1 level only. No Internet access allowed (Network adapter disabled in Control Panel). Rarely used these days. Just for games and one or two other programs.

I only use Mint online.

No 'Patch Tuesday' woes anymore (which seem to be getting worse) and no Windows 10 nagware.

Now I have a peaceful, stress free computing experience.

Maybe you should ask all of these people?

All thanks to Windows 10's April updates.

102 pages so far, 10 posts per page. I'm surprised it isn't all over the Internet. All I've seen is a Forbes article and one or two others so far.

Four hundred MILLION vulnerable Androids are out there

Carl D

I also have a Telstra Samsung Galaxy S2 4G smartphone that I've had for 4 years now. Still on the original battery too.

That has Android version 4.0.4 from about 3 - 4 years ago which was the last update available for it. I guess some people think it's "cool" to change your phone every year. I don't.

My S2 is on a Vodafone prepaid these days. And, I 'rooted' it quite some time ago and removed all the Google rubbish and some of the other useless stuff that was on it and disabled Internet access. I just use it as a phone (shock, horror), camera and MP3 player.

Carl D

No more updates for me

Well, I've just checked for software updates on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 3, 10.1 inch and, once again, I see "The latest updates have already been installed".

I have Android version 4.4.2 which was installed nearly a year and a half ago. Doesn't look like I'll be getting any more updates, does it? So, what am I suppsed to do? Throw it away and buy a new one (which will probably also be 'obsolete' within a couple of years)?

And, these things are not cheap here in Australia. I think I paid something between $300 and $400 for this one. Fortunately, I only use it occasionally these days. I have Firefox installed with the usual protection (NoScript, AdBlock Plus, etc.) even though Firefox seems excruciatingly slow most of the time on this device.

Windows 7's grip on the enterprise desktop is loosening

I've installed (and then removed) Windows 10 about 15 times since last July.

Are those 15 installs included in the alleged 270 million?

I bet they are. And, I'm sure I'm just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak...

How Microsoft copied malware techniques to make Get Windows 10 the world's PC pest

Carl D

Finally had enough...

My main PC and 10 year old HP laptop are now running Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon. What a breath of fresh air.

The last straw came when MS decided to start 'polluting' security updates with W10 nagware - plus it took nearly 4 hours to get 11 security updates for W7 on the laptop last week - 3 hours "checking for updates..." then another hour to download and install them. The main PC doesn't take anywhere near as long but the wait is still annoying.

Been putting up with that every month since the middle of last year. Does anyone still believe that the slow checking for updates for W7 - especially after a clean install - isn't deliberate 'sabotage' by MS? I suspected it when all the trouble started - right at the time W10 was released.

Linux Mint was installed, updated and running in almost no time at all by comparison. On the main PC and the laptop.

My main PC actually now has a W7/Mint dual boot - W7 is at SP1 level only - no further updates with NO Internet access allowed whatsoever. Just for programs that don't have a Linux equivalent at the moment. Now I can sit back, relax, and enjoy using my computers again (plus I'll occasionally grab a bag of popcorn and watch the Windows train wreck continue).

Microsoft's done a terrible job with its Windows 10 nagware

Carl D

My main PC Windows 7 SSD is about to be given a rest until all this update BS is sorted one way or another.

I've almost finished preparing my 2nd SSD with another install of Windows 7 (I have 3 W7 genuine licences, btw) and Linux Mint as a dual boot. Windows 7 is at SP1 level only, with no further updates and NO Internet access allowed whatsoever. All Internet activities will be Mint only.

Not long to go now and when I'm ready it's just a matter of moving the SATA cable from one SSD to the other (with the PC shut down and power off, of course). I keep them both powered inside the tower, makes swapping a little easier.

But, the way things are going, I suspect my W7/Mint drive will be the only one I'll be using very soon.

Microsoft adds 'non-security updates' to security patches

Carl D

The worrying thing about Microsoft's behaviour is that they probably think they're doing everyone a favour. I'll bet Nadella & Co. (and most if not all business leaders today) don't see the slightest thing wrong with what they're doing. It's like they're living in an alternate reality to the rest of us

Welcome to the new world where annoying the hell out of people is the norm. Just look at the garbage that passes for free to air television today as an example - more ads than program, annoying 'popups' while you're actually trying to enjoy the small sections of program between the ads, etc., etc.

And people (especially the young ones with their faces glued to their smartphones seemingly 24/7) just appear to accept it. I weep for the future of humanity.

Anyone seen the 1988 movie "They Live"? It's about someone who discovers a pair of sunglasses that allow him to wake up to the fact that aliens have taken over the Earth. That's what the world seems like today with the likes of Nadella & Co.

MAME goes fully FOSS

Carl D

Brings back memories...

Ah, the good old days when I used to score millions in the arcades on games like Asteroids, Missile Command, Joust, etc.

I discovered MAME back in 2005 and even though I hadn't played the arcade versions of Missile Command and Joust since the early 80's, after a few days of practice I was scoring millions again (MC 'clocks over' at a million but Joust doesn't - I think I had about 2 or 3 million on Joust before I decided to end the game).

Used the mouse (for trackball) and the Z, X and C (fire) buttons for MC and the Z and C buttons for left/right and the right Ctrl button for 'flap' in Joust.

Windows 10 will now automatically download and install on PCs
