I'd say they are quite the same as both lack intelligence and they can only regurgitate what somebody else told them.

If the site has value, then people need to be prepared to accept the cost - in this case, being served adverts than paying a subscription.
Nope. If you want to make money from your site, make it subscription only. No ads, no tracking. Just a freaking subscription.
Oh, wait, nobody will pay for your crap site? Tough luck, try something else.
I found that what makes search useful today is:
- never, ever be logged into the search engine
- search in a blank new tab/window with history, browsing data and cookies cleared (thank you Cookie Autodekete)
- no Google except when trying to narrow down something
- pihole and ublock to block all the crap the search engines think I might be interested in
- Bing for images
- DuckDuckgo or Startpage for normal search
- and last but not least, good old Eyeball Mark I to filter the results.
You don't get it, do you?
It's not about ads, it's about building a profile on you, a profile which could be used by anyone, anytime, for whatever reason they want.
Your innocent remark about something on ElReg? Not a problem, but would you care to bet it won't be a problem a couple of years from now?
