Autonomy was a 'pure-play software company', testifies former HP chief exec Léo Apotheker

Facepalm

In a private meeting between the two chiefs in April 2011, Lynch "gave a very positive description of his company" with emphasis on Autonomy's 2010 full-year financial results, Apotheker testified.

So damned positive that Apotheker rolled over for his tummy ro be rubbed. Well I guess he has walked with a handsome payofff - I don’t know how he could say this in public if he needed another job.....

I remember them as well. I had one for some regular long train journies in the 80s and happily set it up and tapped away debugging on one of the BR trains with my power lead plugged into the mains socket by the luggage rack (which limited my choice of seat). I got some very odd looks from BR staff but I assumed I was not breaking written rules (no one had thought someone would be that stupid) as I was never called on it.

Zuck omitted, incidentally, that Facebook threatened to sue the newspaper if it published its story.

The Grauniad and and in particular Carole Cadwalladr did a fine job exposing and detailing the abuses for public observation. While it only appears to be gently eroding Facebook's value, one hopes the decline will be non linear (as growth for social apps has been in the past). One expects that Zuckerberg and the execs have salted away a lot of the proceeds by now, but future civi litigation may well come after those assets in the future.

There is an outside chance that British courts might even conclude that US justice is even worse than ours and refuse to extradite (although it might be part of a trade 'deal' requirement). HP have a lot off clout (remarkably they still do) and protecting them from their stupidity being exposed seems to be their call on the state. I am not defencing Lynch, but HP have behaved like ignorant childish bullies.

Overall, the group said the firm did not act in the best interests of the plan's participants, and prevented those staffers from discovering the breaches of ERISA "through a series of false and misleading communications".

Other than Leisure Suit Larry and a few favoured execs, does Oracle ever act in anyones best interest?

Been there done that for two of my kids. On the positive side, they had actually listened to me (a first for everything) and backed up to both a cloud service and and external USB disk. The downside, I footed the bill for two (secondhand) Mac Laptops and flogged off the remains of theirs for spares (the better financial option for me) and also lost my own laptop in the interim as,. yes, they were finishing dissertations.

The suggested that of course it was nothing to do with her loud support for it while editor of a daily newspaper in a previous life and her role as editor.
