UK.gov expected to quit controversial harvesting of schoolchildren's nationality data

Noonoot

The topic

Is the article is really about privacy concerning your origins, it's not about healthcare, yet most of the comments are about migrants (who are probably criminals according to some of you) sponging or using frontline services???

Privacy. Privacy of everyone. So don't ask me if I'm white British, afro caribbean,Indian, Asian, male, female next time. Just take everyone to be sexless and possibly from planet Earth for absolutely everything: schooling, job interview, healthcare, and any other occasion when an authority thinks it has the right to know where I'm from. That way we never know who is doing what, where and when.

Hell, yeh, let's just not know anything about anyone, then UK can get back the control it's already lost.

Cisco cuts 250 jobs in San Jose, has 850 more pink slips to hand out

Old and bloated icons of the past

Why blame Trump (note I am not a fan of him)?

Cisco is laying off because there are too many employees for starters and they have nothing to do, additionally many of them are simply not up to scratch. Same story for Ericsson, IBM, and the other "biggies". They're so pompous and full of their own bureaucracy. They simply don't know how to innovate, and whilst they're stumbling, smaller companies are coming along and filling in the gaps, and doing it very well.

The only reason they continue to survive is because they have massive stashes of cash. Unfortuntely, it's money being thrown to the wind.

Yes, I've always wondered how these drones avoid being intercepted by villains. Just like pets get stolen, washing from your garden, shoes from the porch or any thing else the buggers can lay their hands on, what's to stop some someone from picking up the drone and walking off with it, or simple stamping on it to get the parcel?

After London attack, UK gov lays into Facebook, Google for not killing extremist terror pages

Noonoot

History - repeating itself

"This sort of shit, blowing up people, mowing people down in cars because of a religion didn't exist 15 years ago."

Religion has always, and will always, be the forerunner behind the notion of terrorism. Then come politics. It doesn't have to be about blowing yourself up or mowing people down.

To say that the idea of blowing up people (or mowing them down) didn't exist 15 years ago is an insult to the memory of those who have died at the hands of individuals and groups carrying out atrocities in the name of their religion.

True, history shows us that it's predominantly groups that use religion as an excuse to terrororise innocent people. You can go as far back as you like, but the most formidable examples are: the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, the Sicarii, KKK, IRA. What about Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh? Whether it's bombs, torture, mass poisoning, or simply opening fire on innocent people, often it has been individuals representing a cult or ideal, to which their "leader" has then acknowledged it was done in the name of their fanatical organization.

Cult or religious faction - to me there is no difference.

Brit ISP TalkTalk blocks control tool TeamViewer

Re: Sledgehammer meet nut

I tried Screenconnect (Connectwise now) to replace Teamviewer but then I got a fixed IP address and switched software. Uber hires Obama's attorney-general to review its workplaces

Re:Why? and then we ask ourselves why women in are few and far between

I've often asked myself the same question.

And why is that companies promote themselves using adjectives and ideals that follow the "gender equality" agenda when if I were CEO of any of these companies I would be embarassed to say the least that 15% or even 19% of the staff were women.

In colossal shock, Uber alleged to be wretched hive of sexism, craven managerial ass-covering

Noonoot

She had to make a choice?!

WTF, if you read the original blog post what is even more disgusting is this:

I was then told that I had to make a choice: (i) I could either go and find another team and then never have to interact with this man again, or (ii) I could stay on the team, but I would have to understand that he would most likely give me a poor performance review when review time came around, and there was nothing they could do about that. [snip] .....One HR rep even explicitly told me that it wouldn't be retaliation if I received a negative review later because I had been "given an option".

What kind of dickheads are working for this company? Doh! Big ones obviously. The whole company and its politics are agressive. One reason why I will NEVER use their services.

Big blues: IBM's remote-worker crackdown is company-wide, including its engineers

Noonoot

Pissstakers galore, crap management

A couple of rotten apples will always spoil it for the rest. A handful taking the piss and not being caught means that management sucks and the company is totally ignorant as to what is going on. Remote working or flexi working is a must for those who are parents with young children or for whatever reason are unable to live near enough to the office.

Companies that don't want to compromise or go back on what they originally said are simply admitting that they f***ed up and their managers are incompetent.

Oh and by the way, Ericsson is no better in terms of presence vs absence. But it's not the remote workers taking the piss, it's the ones that work on site: arrive at 10, 2 hour lunch break, go to gym next door, cigarette breaks, leave at 7pm. How many hours do management really think they put in? Come on. And the one that arrives early to leave early and actually WORKS?! That person is frowned upon for "leaving early".

Trump's visa plan leaks: American techies first

Noonoot

First your own, then the others

Everything starts at home. First your own, then the others. That's the way it has to be.

Educate your own, put the mechanisms in place to ensure they have a chance of being hired, then, and only then, if you can't find who you are looking for, you bring in manpower from abroad.

Investing in workforce might have been better

Speaking from experience......Ericsson Italy, where hundreds have been laid off including employees with much to offer, employs 1000s of people which to be honest seem to be part of the woodwork. I have no idea what they do in there, many have been there for 15+ years doing the same thing. How can any company have a future if you don't invest in the staff you have and you just let them rot with you?

Their strategy to cut resources by outsourcing i.e bring in outsiders to learn with you, fire you, then send the outsiders back to where they came from to do your job hoping it will cost them less, obviously didn't pay off. So it's back to the drawing board for them. Complacency is a company's worst enemy.

I hope that others do the same.
