Linus Torvalds banishes masters, slaves and blacklists from the Linux kernel, starting now

Flashfox

Really?

So are we now also banning "master" and "slave" from all dictionaries and our vocabulary? These two terms clearly explained the relationship between two devices when one was subservient to the other. Oh wait, will "subservient" also be banned?

I support BLM and the changes that are staring to occur, BUT this is getting ridiculous.

"Master" and "Slave" are not bad words when used appropriately. I never used them for people but for systems where one is the master controlling the other. I'll adapt (no choice) but I still find this going overboard. I can think of dozens of other common words which could be banned because some consider them offensive.

How far will this go? We ban those two words but swear words like d*mn (etc.) are now accepted on TV, movies and elsewhere. Even our POTUS openly uses them .

Google Fiber experiment ends with Choc Factory paying Louisville $3.8m to clean up its mess

The frustration with Google is that they start something, get people interested, then dump everything. I was looking forward to Google Fiber as they started to install this in San Diego area ... then they stopped. At least I now have 1 Gbps U/D FTTP service through at&t U-Verse

Good news: Largest, most ancient known galaxy supercluster is spotted. Bad news: It's collapsing on itself

Flashfox

Hmm ... 2 billion years after the Big Bang ... that means that it's an "old" image that is ~11.8 billion years old. As someone else mentioned, what does that super cluster look like "today"? Does it even exist anymore? Heck 11 billion years ago our sun didn't even exist.

That is unless the flow of time is not constant ... but that's for another thread :-)

FYI: Drone maker DJI's 'Get it on Google Play' website button definitely does not get the app from Google Play...

Re: That's actually a good feature

You buy a Google product, you embrace the Google environment. Nothing different than Apple and their ecosystem.

Perhaps you need to buy a Google phone (device, etc.), hack it, load a non-Google/Android OS then take your chances and load APKs at you will. If you want to play with a Google device in the Google ecosystem, then you get the whole package, the good and the less good.

London flatmate (Julian Assange) sues landlord (government of Ecuador) in human rights spat

Flashfox

Suing Ecuador ???? What a joke!

He is suing Ecuador????? He doesn't like the T&Cs? Then he should just leave the embassy or the Ecuadorans should just kick him out.

This is simply cowardice as he doesn't want to face justice. Is he afraid that the Americans will make him disappear like the Saudis did with the reporter in Turkey? . Assange knew very well what he was getting into and to expect "eternal freedom" was just plain dumb! As the saying goes "Live by fire and die by fire".

Your Twitter app stopped working? Here's why

Flashfox

Re: Oh dear... Twitter stopped working.

He is a (supposed) "cheap" billionaire so he doesn't care? He will make us taxpayers pay? He will be happy that his detractors won't get on. What do you expect from a narcissistic and lying POTUS (flame shields on max :-)

Re: They had no choice.

Must have been using an OLD iPhone with Apple's original navigation. They were looking for NaSA and wound up there in place :-)

I like your "Darwin Award" LOL

Reminds me of people who ask me to help them with their computers and see that their browser window is about 2" tall. The rest of the browser's window is filled with search bars.

When I point this out to them and dare ask why they have so many, the typical answer is "It was offered and I clicked on it". <-- That's why I like the Darwinian award for these people LOL

Re: Dark-matter clingfilm, dark-energy static

Two possibilities:

1. Dark Matter has more influence in our universes that anyone can have imagined.

2. We are all in "The Matrix" and the computer program was hacked to create an impossible imbalance.

I like #2. After all, this is "The Register" :-)

'I feel violated': Engineer who pointed out traffic signals flaw fined for 'unlicensed engineering'

Flashfox

The use of "engineer"

Like it or not, the use of "engineer" has been broadened over the years. Today you have "sanitation engineers", "system engineers", "applications engineers", "sales engineers", "insert your own" and none of these persons need to have "engineering" degrees.

Many companies give these pseudo-engineering titles to their employees and the latter have no choice. However, none of these persons can perform "engineering tasks that require certification" (aka civil engineers, electrical engineers, etc.).

This guy in Oregon should not have paid the fine if he didn't commit anything illegal. Did he state we was a degreed engineer?

Pointing out the flaw and supporting it with data is commendable and definitely not illegal. Seems to me that the REAL reason was the city/state wanting to bury this study as it would affect their bottom line and open them to lawsuits.

Microsoft drives an Edge between Adobe and the web: Flash ads blocked

Flashfox

The problem is that there still are a very large number of sites that require FLASH. So turning off Flash is fine (did this) but you then realize that you are locked out of many sites. So either turn on FLASH or move elsewhere... but if it's a site you need to access, what are your choices?

By 2019, vendors will have sucked out your ID along with your cash 5 billion times

Flashfox

That's why I now wonder how long it will take for us to go to the next step: Bio-metric implants that combine your DNA and other parameters to generate your unique ID. In other words: No implant = No services = Shades of "666" :-)

Flashfox

Are biometrics safe?

Although biometrics are a safe way to provide identity, there is a dark side as noted in other posts. Once the device stores your biometric data it can be hacked even if encrypted. I am certain that some will find ways to be able to use the stolen biometric info to impersonate you.

Are we heading towards the "unique chip implant" where this data is not on the device but in the implant? It would be secure as the data can include your unique DNA and/or other physiological items which would be combined to make up the unique "MyID".

Anyone for "666"? :-)
