Quantum takes on GPFS and Lustre in commercial HPC market

Lizardfs

Lizardfs looks like a good alternative to Lustre and GPFS. It's a fork of Moosefs which mimics the proprietary Gogglefs. The media targeted EditShare EFS is based on lizardfs. It does require a fsd but I'm beginning to think that having the storage vendor in control of both sides of the equation may be a good thing.

Primary Data

I disagree that PD is only attractive t those wanting to consolidate multiple storage platforms. I think it's the perfect scale out solution. One can pick best of breed NFS storage as building blocks and keep adding as needed. The ability to direct data between the underlying storage is also attractive.

Those who do... do. Those who don't... can't.

Solving the data silo problem using a crawl-walk-run strategy

If this works it will be exactly what I'm looking for.

I can use multiple NAS systems of varying performance of my choosing. I can scale out by using smaller building block NASs. These smaller NASs can be easily retired/replaced by moving all data off one by one. I can use flash based NASs to catch all my hot data from the start, no relying on predictive caching and I get performance on first read. All this while the data stays put as for a users are concerned... sign me up! They just need to add OS X support. A necessity in M&E.

Yes it would be a fairer comparison if it included capacity or shelves sold. eXtremIO systems being flash based are more expensive per TB. Easily 4x as expensive per TB. Of course the time period is far shorter for eXtemIO.

Re: HDR is more important than UHD, right?

Yes HDR make a difference you can see from down the hall. Unless you're viewing your 4K TV from 6 feet away the increased resolution is barely noticeable.

4K TV's exist solely to replace current HD sets. 4K was not a consumer mandate but a TV manufacturer's. Total tail wagging the dog.
