Does anyone know if this is desktop only or impacting server OS as well? If only the desktop how is it taking down Banks and Broadcasters? I get airport terminals they have a lot of Windows based kiosks but the rest are a mystery. Is Sky broadcasting reallly depending on a Windows desktop OS to work somewhere?!?

I wonder if half of the issues were on purpose and half due to obvious issues with their 10nm tooling/production process. This has then caused a supply and demand issue, which allowed their prices to creep up, not the end of the world if you're dominating the market, which they were when this all started well over a year ago now.

What Intel didn't account for was not only AMD coming back at them, but having a product line capable of coming back at them.

The switch to AMD isn't hard for most, so I can't really see any major blockers to people switching. Some license costs might be high on the AMD platform due to their preference for high core counts in their CPU's. MS licensing can get pricey if using VL with cores.

I've switched to AMD for my desktop late part of last year. First time I've used an AMD chip for about 15 years but damn its good.

Weight, its all about the weight!

I've worked on a bid for a current F1 team for factory and track solution. We lost out partially as they wanted the kit for free, or near enough with random kick backs and corporate deals. Honestly it was basically selling IT to a marketing team with the solution being the secondary concern.

The second reason we lost out was weight. Turns out adding only a few U of extra hardware adds quite a lot of cost in shipping weight over the whole season. It was crazy money for even an extra 30-50KG of kit. Our solution had some options no one else's did but as such weighed more.

The design was simple enough. 6 Node solution in the garage and a backup 4 node solution in the engineers truck.

Regardless of the outcome I loved working with them. Would still love to work in F1 but Its a young mans game these days and It'd be bloody hard to be away from home for such long periods through the year.

Old 2012 Models

I still run 3 upgraded old Mac Mini 2012 models with vSphere installed as a lab setup. Work great to this day and have been running 24/7 for 2 years without issue, even today with 6.7 installed. With CPU support dropping out of vSphere its time to upgrade Can't see me replacing them with further minis without being able to upgrade the RAM and SSD without paying the apple TAX. Time to start looking around else where. Shame as these have been rock solid devices for me. On the plus side they might still be worth a few quid with 16GB of RAM and 500GB SSD drives.

I've been using Cisco StealthWatch recently. Got to say I'm impressed with it. Can detect this sort of threat very well. Not perfect, no tool is, but would alert me to anyone taking a large download of data from an internal server or uploading large datasets too. Plus all the other intelligence built in around C&C and regular threats. It'll even detect threats in HTTPS without the need to decrypt the traffic. It's linked to ISE and if configured could automatically disconnect the user. Although we don't quite yet have full confidence to let it loose on its own so still requires manual intervention for now. Worth a google of anyones time.

Yes basically. Dump out the hashes and then use something like John the Ripper or Cain and Abel on it.

Worryingly its rare I find an AD install where LM hashes are disabled which makes it even easier. It can hit silly numbers of passwords in very short time spans. NT hashes take a bit longer and need some more work.

We check AD once a month for weak passwords, with just a solid dictionary and 1 day checking its amazing how many so called 'complex' passwords it will get (mostly due to a solid dictionary of real world passwords. Those users are reminded twice before having their account locked and having to answer to their manager. Good policy and backing of the business are key to our progress. In the last two years its dropped from capturing over 60% of the passwords in AD down to around 10%. Still too many but with a high staff turn over and lots of users it'll never be perfect.

Agreed. How many times has an AV vendor caused a blue screen, plenty. I'm sure Sophos have had a couple of issues before. Once it even identified its own update engine as a virus and deleted/quarantined its own update files thus rendering it useless.

I've got one of those too. Battery lasts about 20 minutes and the quality is poor. I use it for shots that risk the camera, for everything else the quality of the GoPro is way beyond all the cheaper quality cameras. But it depends what your using it for. Want professional quality shots then the GoPro is right up there.

You do get what you pay for, but I'm with the rest of you that its far too expensive for most and this is why sales are dipping. I managed to pick up a couple of Hero 5's around Christmas for £250. Which is far more realistic price point imo.

The only saving grace for the obviously cash strapped Premier League, is that setting up the VPN adds some complexity and also free VPN's capable of delivering the content at the speed required are limited and normally paid services. I still think the decline in the mobile market is down mostly to a lack of innovation. They just don't offer anything much over the previous models. Look I've added a megapixel. It focuses .001ms faster. The CPU is double the speed of the one that is still not really being taxed. I've made the edges a little more round and made the handset so big you've may as well be using a Tablet.

Talking of tablets, no real mention of the still shrinking market. With big phones dominating is there still a place for a tablet? Is the tablet doomed, I think it might be scooped up by the Laptop market or the two will basically merge into one.

Although I do think you are wrong about smartwatches. I think they have a place. Although the market is not a huge one, but then watches aren't for everyone anyway. Take the tablet and phone issue, you don't really need both when the phones are getting this big and both do exactly the same thing and this is impacting Tablet sales. The watch offers some nice features, notifications at a glance and almost an extension of your phone rather than trying to compete with it. If they can really nail down the health side that'll really help as that market is still looking strong. I agree they haven't found an exact place in the market and aren't fixing a problem but neither did the first iPhone. It was just a phone, with an impressive touch screen. I think they will find their place but again they need to innovate more than they did this year. Both the iWatch and Gear S didn't really offer much over the previous years releases.

The first iPhone lacked almost all the features of the other phones of the time. But its innovative touch screen was a glimpse of the future of all devices to follow. We need another iPhone moment just not sure where its going to come from or what it is.

What bugged me about Force Awakens was the fact it was basically A New Hope remade. Which isn't a failure but still nothing new. It was just the same thing being rehashed again.

Rogue one at least stood out as its own film and filled the gap between the 3 we don't talk about and the original 3. It showed the Rebels acting as Rebels should by doing what needed to be done. I thought it was the best star was since Empire.

Agreed. S Voice is awful. Also wish it had better app development. Missing some key fitness apps and having to rely on S Health is also rather annoying. The S3 hardware is amazing and battery life is solid too, so far really impressed with it on the whole. Just a bit of polish required.

Surely testing their code base is tricky. The sheer amount of drivers they support makes very tricky to test against all possible variations.

Admitted they don't help themselves. You could run two identical systems built from the exact same original media and I'd guarantee in 3 months time under the hood both would look quite different.

My biggest gripe with 10 isn't the fact it can go wrong, any OS can and will go wrong at times. You'll hear more crying about Windows than MAC OS/Linux due to the sheer numbers of PCs running windows. My BIG issue is the fact Win 10 is basically one big chunk of Spyware. The sheer amount of information its constantly reporting back is so worrying. I think 8.1 got the same Spyware updates a while back but think 7 might have skipped it. I want an OS that doesn't report back every little thing I do.

I'm sure i read somewhere that Samsung are considering doing a remote brick of the devices if people don't return them. Not sure how they'd stand on this, but assuming they'll know the IMEIs of the devices it seems plausible that they could do it.

This has been a monumental screw up, no doubt. The biggest one is not being able to tell what devices have the battery. Faulty batteries happen more than most people realise, I remember Dell/Apple etc getting a bad batch of batteries from Sony a while back. The difference is they were able to identify the exact batches and recall just those needed. I'm amazed Samsung can't tell exactly which devices used the bad batch of batteries.

Oddly all of this doesn't stop me wanting the phone (A fixed version obviously), as it looks to be a great device.

The car should be capable of detecting a lack of grip well before the driver and should be more than capable of detecting grip levels of all wheels. All modern cars read the wheel sensors and adjust power etc at amazing speed. The issue with crashing with a car where neither the driver or fully in command is the car will react to a slide, the drive will react slower to the same slide, at which time the car is applying the brakes to correct it, the driver is also trying to correct it, both end up fighting each other and neither actually stop the event from happening.

This is why I think either the driver needs to be fully in control or the car does. At some point fully automated cars will be much better at lowering crash rates.

I've no doubt driverless cars will reduce accidents. But until the leap to fully automated cars is made these 'systems' are just going to increase accidents not reduce them.

Went to watch it last night. Great film. So its not really Star Trek in the traditional sense, but its still really enjoyable. Take it for what it is and you'll love it.
