Yay, Intel chip shortages should be over soon! Nope. Strap in, at least another quarter or two to go, say PC execs

Dell AMDs Once

Once upon a time, a decade or so ago, Dell did have a few AMD models. I know because I purchased three C521 mini-tower models with dual-core AMD processors. They ran very nicely for a number of years, finally dying off one-by-one as their motherboard capacitors failed. They were good performance at a good price at the time and yes, Dell could do better for their customers if they still offered some AMD models in their lineup.

Truth is, next time I need to replace a desktop unit (currently Dell XPS 8900 i5 Skylake), I'lll be looking for an AMD-powered system first, not a Dell system first.

Since Agreement is Impossible, Why Not Name It Yourself

While this is so far down the chain that it will never be seen,

until I run for public office and all of my old posts are dredged up to destroy me,

since it is clearly impossible to come up with any name to satisfy a plurality, let alone a majority,

may I suggest that,

the first invocation up pops a text box simply asking: What Do You Want to Call Me?

Type in your desired identifier and all GIMP is replaced by your new name.

After that it can be an option on the Help menu to change program name.

What could possibly be better?

(And no, I didn't have the time or energy to read all 177 posts and counting to see who else came up with this before me)

Why did I buy a gadget I know I'll never use?

Apple files patent for long-rumoured iRing-type bling

Just One More Thing

There is one thing that I would want from an iRing -- more likely to be called an Apple Ring -- and that is that I could touch the side of any computer display (including phone and pay terminals) and it would securely validate me into any site without me needing me to type in a password otherwise. And it would deauthorize immediately if removed so that it couldn't be stolen and used.

Even better if it could sense my DNA and automatically authenticate itself to start with each time I put it on.

I think of the lost years of my life spent typing in secure passwords otherwise.

The Elephant in the Room

The elephant in the room isn't mentioned in the article -- No Cloud!

The biggest Adobe takeaway in PS/CS has been buying, owning, and installing your own copy on your own computer and not paying again until you upgrade. And not everybody likes the cloud with its monthly tariff. The biggest "feature" any other competing editor can offer is a locally installed and owned version -- which Affinity Photo is offering.

But they do need a Windows version when they have the development resources to support one because no matter how big you are in the Apple world, that's still the small pond of computing.

Finally!

This feature alone could turn me into a dedicated Chrome user. Flagging the annoyances on the tab was a small step -- this is the destination.
