Users of 123 Reg caught out by catch-all redirect cut-off

Re: 123-Reg still have customers?

Yeah, that's a me-too where Gandi is concerned. Only seems to affect UK domains - I control some EU ones that Gandi are continuing to forward FOC. But the writing is on the wall, now looking for an alternative. Google Domains is an option, IF it continues - Google do have a history of stopping useful services for no obvious reason.

Meta mostly fails in appeal against order from UK watchdog to sell Giphy

Why are the Brits involved?

I don't understand the background to this...

Meta is a USA entity. So is Giphy.

So why does the UK get to have any say in this?

Why O & I?

Does anyone know why O (off) and I (On) were chosen as pretty much universal symbols for power switches?

OK, so O (On) & O (Off) would be pretty confusing but why "I" for On? Indeed, does "O" really mean "Off" - is this an English-speaking vanity?

Why not a completely pictorial/symbolic pair of, umm, symbols? If so, what should they (have) be(en)?

Overtime opportunities

As a very junior Operator working shifts on an ICL 2980 at Bath University, I heard a very persistent rumour of an ICL Engineer caught "earning" overtime by judicious use of a 9v battery dragged across the backplane of said mainframe.

Apparently, this used to happen close to the end of his shift, because, of course, once he started the "repair", he had to stay and finish the job. And it happened too often to be just bad luck.

It seems he got caught when, after suspicions were aroused, his manager hid in an empty cabinet and caught him red-handed.

As I said, just a rumour, perhaps an urban myth, I have no confirmed facts, but it was a very popular tale at the time.

Is it decadent that I use four different computers each day, at different times?

eInk screens ARE too small

I use an 8.4" tablet for reading eBooks. It's heavier than a dedicated eInk reader like a Kindle, but they are, indeed, far too small to read anything comfortably on them. Ideally, I'd want a 10" eInk reader - I know they are available, but at eye-watering prices and seem to be for "professional" use, with note-taking via a pen/scribe to be the USP.

As for using multiple computers, pretty much everyone does shurelee? Most modern TV's have an Android menu interface, mobiles are the most versatile of computery things (except for actually making a call, or worse, [not] answering one.) - even yer av'rage car has at least one computer in it, even if you mostly use it for the GPS and/or in-care entertainment functions.

Instant justice

This shows that when someone defames or otherwise, insults you, the correct course of action is to instantly punch him in the mouth.

Shame really, the likes of Musk need a put-down every now and again, to help keep their feet on terra firma. 'merkin law has never looked very impressive for the hoi-polloi, and even less so now. Not that I'm saying UK law is any better... the richer you are, the "fairer" it is.

Toxic contamination?

I thought the Antares was fuelled by liquid oxygen and RP-1 (refined jet fuel) - how did this combo manage to contaminate the Wallops site then? Shurelee most of it would have burned up when the flight was scuttled. And since airliners burn a less-refined variant of the stuff, just how toxic is it anyway?

Google reveals OnHub WiFi router, complete with GLOWING RING

What's the point?

I don't understand who this sort of device is targeted at.

Home users invariably access the 'net via their Skyhub, Livebox or whatever broadband router combo box supplied by (and configured by) whoever they sign up with. So why would they want something like this?

Small business users? Unlikely I would've thought.. Netgear, Cisco etc. are well-known well thought of boxen suppliers and their admin interfaces, quirky or no, are no great frightener to the average local sysadmin... this offering has no clear advantage that I can see over the "standard" router.
