Ooh, my machine is SO much faster than yours... Oh, wait, that might be a bit of a problem...

Re: Memory Utilisation

Just to add that Opera is no better than Chrome or Edge for sending data back.

Re: Memory Utilisation

10Gb! There must be something wrong there. I have so many pages open on chrome the tabs shrink down to micro size but it never uses 10Gb ram.

The mistake was releasing Edge when it wasn't finished. It was barely even beta level when they pushed it out as the default browser. Now its tarnished with a bad reputation. Its going to be hard to persuade users to try it again. Why would they when Chrome is fine as it is?

Microsoft are all over the place these days.

They did do that, the good thing is you can hack it off. But you cant in 10..

New Windows 10 privacy controls: Just a little snooping – or the max

I welcome the privacy dashboard where you can see the data they hold on you. I notice though that there is no option to say don't collect any more data. You can clear it but then it starts clocking up again. So pointless really, they are just trying to appease.

They need this data collection as its Nadella's business model to make money from it. So it will never stop. Windows is now a cloud service and never coming back.

Adblock overlord to Zuckerberg: Lay down your weapons and surrender

Re: Eyeo says it [..] wants "user empowerment"

To be fair theres an option in adblock to also block the "friendly" ads so you dont see any ads at all.

I use Origin though just because the applet is lighter.

I wouldn't mind the ads if they weren't so bloated. Some websites slow to a crawl if you have all the ads on. Its a shame for the guys who do make the effort to create efficient light websites. Publications I read often I white list the ads to support them.

That huge ad at the top of the Reg is pretty ugly.

Windows 10 needs proper privacy portal, says EFF

Re: That EFF document is a solid gold reference

Agreed.. The French are giving it a go at least with some real legal challenge.

MS know full well what they are doing is cheeky. But they know they can get away with it for years before anything happens. Same happens with all these privacy and monopoly cases. It takes years and then there's finally a punishment but overall it still works out positive them.

The only thing that will change this merry go round is people voting with their feet. If you dont like it, dont use it. But we know that wont happen in any big numbers. So it is what it is.. and the big companies know it.

Re: Paid option

Dont forget Windows 10 is not free. Only the in place upgrade was free and even that isn't there anymore. OEMs still need to pay for Win10 and there is still a retail price from the very beginning. That's the worst thing of all this, even if you pay you still cant escape.

Unless you are enterprise of course, MS know they cant push around big business with dodgy T&Cs and adverts.

Re: Facebook already offers a “single unified screen"

Facebook are playing the game well with the privacy options screen but I still wouldn't let their app anywhere near my phone. Anything that sucks that much battery power when idle must be up to no good.

HMRC's IR35 tweaks have 90% of UK's IT contractors up in arms

Its broke

The whole tax system is broken and needs to be reset for the modern world. We have some people being taxed into the ground to the point its almost not worth them getting a pay rise because it makes no difference to their bottom line. They just get more stress with little extra wage to compensate. They are stuck in a tax band with nowhere to go.. Then there are people and big companies that can avoid paying any tax at all. After all this the government still doesn't have enough money to pay for the services we need. System is broken.

Cortana expelled from Windows 10's new school editions

Re: Gotta be paying off a lot of governments with data

Hi, I only just seen this.. Here you go, the formal notice in full..

Its long but jump to page 3, thats where it gets meaty..

Theres also an article about it here on the Reg somewhere.

Re: Gotta be paying off a lot of governments with data

France has already started proceedings against them for breaching data protection and bad T&Cs.

That's only for Enterprise customers. If you are a one man band at home then MS think you are not worthy of the big boy version of Windows.

Every six months they will reinstall your system removing software they decide is no good for you, replacing the default apps back to MS defaults. And that's if it upgrades without trashing the thing altogether. Urgh really its so poor, what are they doing.

This is the big turn off for me with Win 10. Not just the simple fact of telemetry and privacy but more the fact that every 6 months we will now need to accept a whole new version of Windows and accept whatever changes Microsoft makes. There's no way out, you must take the upgrade. This will happen every 6 months! I cant take that kind of ultimatum on my production machine.

They need to have some kind of LTS option like Linux if they insist on people upgrading. Im staying well away from Win10.

Has that ever happened, ever? No to me, I dont use a single store app, let alone NEED to use one.

This is exactly the version I want! Maybe I will sign up to one of those dodgy east London language universities to get it! :D

Windows 10: Happy with Anniversary Update?

Hey Microsoft, delete Win10 and start again from scratch, thanks.

Microsoft ordered to fix 'excessively intrusive, insecure' Windows 10

Re: Apple

Im starting to lean to Apple too. Linux is still not refined enough and certain apps unsupported. Apple also has some privacy concerns but it seems that you can opt out of them easier and stay opted out.

Windows as a service is way too unpredictable. I see on a test laptop that Win 10 likes to reset app defaults and privacy settings after major updates. Until I can turn telemetry OFF and not just switch to Basic then I wont use it. Its not just privacy either. Ive lost all trust in MS to do the right thing and do it in my interests. They add and remove features at a whim and I actually find Win10 to be clunky.

Once my current laptop dies I'm leaning towards a Macbook Pro. I will just have to take the £££ hit !

90 days of Android sales almost beat 9 months' worth for all flavours of Win 10

Re: Symbian

I guess we will never know... As we are dreaming fantasies I would rather ask what if back in 2010 Nintendo teamed up with Palm and made a Nintendo phone based on WebOS. Mario giving me turn by turn directions on the maps. A quick bit of Mario Kart on the train to work. WebOS with a nice solid bit of Nintendo hardware. Now that's something I would buy!

Microsoft: Why we tore handy Store block out of Windows 10 Pro PCs

Re: I've come to the conclusion

Ok when I say search of course I mean the Ad revenue that comes around search, thats what the term "search" includes. Im pretty much losing interest now but some more analysis lifted from another site.

"Search advertising revenue was up 23 percent, driven by higher search volume and higher revenue per search. On its earnings call, Microsoft said that Bing had made an operating profit, with quarterly revenue of more than $1 billion. This is a significant milestone for the search engine that is increasingly being integrated into Microsoft's other products, most visibly as Cortana. In September, some 20 percent of search revenue was driven by Windows 10 devices."

Win10 has only been out a short time so this will continue to rise. This is the main reason behind the hard push of Win10, they will have more control of search (Ads) this way. Also because its easier for them to push their cloud offerings on Win10. Why else would they offer it for free?

Google make a huge amount of money from search, that's why they pay people so they can be default. Most of their money comes from AdWords "search". http://www.investopedia.com/articles/investing/020515/business-google.asp

Re: I've come to the conclusion

Hey, Im not Satya Nadella and I hate Win10 as much as the next guy. But look it up and you will see Bing search share has rising sharply since Win10 came out.

I copied this from the news.

"35% of search revenue in March 2016 was driven by Windows 10 devices, with Windows 10 having around 270 million users. This number, and presumably Microsoft’s search business, could double or triple over the next few years."

So this is what they are going for by pushing Win10. We know search is big money, look at Google.

Re: I've come to the conclusion

You make a lot of sense in your points but you are missing something. The money stream for MS comes from search... Just recently it was announced that Microsoft search revenue rose by 18%. That would mostly come from Bing searches through Win10 Cortana and also all the data mining and Edge running on all those Win10 systems. The more people that upgrade the more money they make from Search. They have ditched their old model and are going Google on us. And its exactly the types of people, granny's etc that wont bother changing Win10 defaults that they will make money from.

Two weeks of Windows 10: Just how is Microsoft doing?

Re: No mention of Tablets

Yeah nothing wrong with Win7. If I rolled from Win10 back to 7 I think there is only three big things I would really miss.

1. The task manager is much better in Win10 - It shows more info and is more powerful.

2. The super quick boot - Not just to login screen but the time to usable desktop is super quick compared to Win7.

3. Sound engine - The WASAPI and ASIO sound setup seems more robust. No more crashes and low latency.

For the future DirectX12 looks promising for games. Need to wait and see if that's really true though.

But you know really there is nothing wrong with Win10 and multi screen support. It works. Metro apps are not full screen, have them any size you want. Multiple desktops built in now.

Big downside to Win10 for me is all the tracking and privacy. I turn everything off but who knows if that makes a difference! Its the way everything is going now though. Andorid and OSX do the same.

Obviously there is linux but that is simply not a suitable option for the software and hardware I use.
