Steve Jobs unveils 30% subs model for ... everything

Ian Wellock

Alas, not so

If only that were the case.

Apple now *require* publishers to offer an in-app single click option if there is an outside-app version, *and* publishers can't provide links to external locations where the outside-app version is *and* publishers can't offer better prices outside the app.

I wouldn't mind if we had equal opportunity to promote our own version, but I think few end-users will see the choice of 'click here' versus 'go to your web browser and type this address in, and then go through hoops' as being competitive; Apple now require us to cripple our outside app systems so the in-app version is far superior for the end-user.

Pirates: Good for Microsoft, great for open sourcers

FAIL

Same old same old

This argument has been around as long as piracy has; if you have nothing new to add to it, why are you repeating it?

Aussie MP slapped with $10k phone bill

Ian Wellock

Doesn't sound likely

The iPhone requires any app over 10MB to be downloaded over wi-fi or sync'ed via a computer. You'd have to download more than 500 apps to get a cell data bill of $10,000 -- the kid must have been surfing.

Navigation Choice

I'm curious as to why you chose the downtown store to go to first, given the third one you went to was actually closer to your starting point?

Apple's iPad to launch with 30,000-volume free library

Ian Wellock

DRM-free

Gutenberg's library is a very important offering for Apple: since the iPad won't be able to read Adobe DRM-encrypted ePubs, the format that 99% of the ebook publishers insist on using, you'll be restricted to Gutenberg's DRM-free ePubs and Apple's ebooks.

If you've ever bought any ePubs, you won't be able to access them on the iPad. For me, that's a big deal...

Symantec Y2.01K bug still stymies customers

Evolution is to blame

Now we know what happened to the Mayans; they evolved into Symantec.

Obviously it was a lesser branch of Mayan culture that favoured 2010 as the end of the calendar rather than 2012, but still...

iPhone 3G not compatible with existing accessories

Ian Wellock

Who exactly is going to complain?

The accessory manufacturers now get to make a trivial modification to their kit, and sell it at an inflated price, and ensure that all 3G iPhoners will have to buy that version and no other. Isn't this a win-win for them and Apple?

The only people likely to suffer from this are us poor loyal supporters and we've never been the main consideration up till now, so why should that change?

Pirate Bay offers uncensored, ad-backed blog hole

Ian Wellock

Why is this news?

Someone's going to host a blog that you can post to if you don't break the law.

What's the news part of this? Isn't this, like, 99.99% of all blogs?

Is it that it's the Pirate Bay that's hosting it, that makes it news?

Stumped.

Jazelle and the EULA

EULA: You can only use Apple's Interpreters.

Jazelle: On-chip, hence one of Apple's Interpreters.

JVM using Jazelle: EULA compliant.

Hurrah!

Resurgence

I've noticed a huge resurgence in spam the last two weeks or so; has he decided to go back to 'ordinary' emails again?
