Everyone cites that 'bugs are 100x more expensive to fix in production' research, but the study might not even exist

Train Wreck Of A Newsletter ?

The Newsletter seems to focus on the cost involved to fix a software problem within the software team.

There are numerous other teams involved including testing, production, shipping, field engineers etc. (not to mention sales & marketing - ok I just did !).

If a defect is detected early and self contained within the development team and rectified within a timely manner the others teams need not be involved hence the costs can be relatively small.

However, defects are often like snakes and ladders causing a design to go back many steps & teams possibly to the very beginning: it doesn't take an expert to figure out the cost is generally cheaper the smaller the snake !

Less Is Sometimes More ?

I must be old school since I still think the following words of wisdom from C.A.R. Hoare to be relevant here: "There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies. The first method is far more difficult."

Obviously new features are being added to a complicated structure but overall (and being slightly cynical) either what came before was not up to the job or some the new stuff is bloatware ! (as in New Improved washing powder type claim every few years).

Something has to give eventually - at the current rate Linus will likely run out of local disk space for the kernel source code in 10 to 15 years time ?

Pair programming: The most extreme XP practice?

The Sum of The Parts is Greater

We didn't call it pair programming simply working together to solve problems.

I was an embedded person and the other half of the pair was a DSP genius. We both knew what each liked and much more importantly what each disliked so the division of work generally happened naturally. Together we could solve almost any problem we encountered and the way we best communicated was simply by talking though not necessarily sitting together for most of the time.

The Register Print Icon used to format multiple pages into a single web page - alas it is no longer visible (to me at least).

Re: Thinner devices with longer battery life

How about lighter < 1Kg easily achievable.

13" to 14" Matt Display, Full HD and < 1Kg with 4+ hour battery life at < £400 == a purchase for me.

Not a lot to ask for really but the manufacturers simply don't get it (low res glossy tat is mostly all they can be bothered to produce).
