Stallman's final interview as FSF president: Last week we quizzed him over Microsoft visit. Now he quits top roles amid rape remarks outcry

Clown world

No matter what Stallman said, he is an icon in the industry and shouldn't have sacked for a blog article of an over inflated ego

Quite an inflated response isn't it ? Calling other small genitaled is surely a reflection of low self esteem. Not to mention a typical feminine reply alluding to sexual value

Re: Eh?

You are wrong about this, shared libraries work much in the same way on Windows and Linux. You can not load a dll without an executable like rundll.exe ( a big culprit in spreading malware ) and privilege escalation is not possible without exploiting some kind of vulnerability , which traditionally are quite a few in Windows. The issue with Windows is all the outdated code and backward compatibilities, no new language is going to change that.

>I'll give you a simple example: on Linux/UNIX systems, it is not possible to load a shared library (*.so) into memory and execute it with or without escalated/root privileges. On Linux/UNIX systems, shared libraries are not executable, and can only be loaded from within a separate and independent execution context -- i.e. a running program. Privilege separation applies to the running program.

Re: Eh?

Really ? Do you think that malware is on Windows because it is the buggiest OS ? What would happen if everyone suddenly started using Linux as their main desktop ? ( besides a huge shit storm )

That being said , I agree that AVs were a burden on computer resources ( not really now when you have 10+ cores ) , but there's no amount of "secure" code that will prevent user idiocy. Also, most people would not like a dictatorial OS that restricts you in every way possible "just for your own good"

Re: Genetic diversity

A lot of genetic variation can arise within hybrids of two different species.

It seems it happened in Sub Saharan Affie as well as in Europe, only with an older more primitive humanoid :

>So you've never worked a day in your life? Figures.

I never worked as temp. How the f did you understand I have never worked ? I have been working on a full time position for more than 10 years now, the handle is just that, a catchy name.

>Why shouldn't I hire them if they're the best candidate for the job? What they do on their own time is none of my business.

>you I would never hire on the basis you would not fit in with the rest of the employees and would make their lives a misery.

Chances are , if they're alchoholic in their private life, they will bring that behavior to work. I am not speaking as a programmer , but as a manager. Which I am not nor I wish to be. But my sincere thought is , I would not want to hire people with shady habits

ProgrammerForHire

Re: Drunken behavior is acceptable ?

As far as I know, temps get paid. I might be wrong, never had the pleasure.

So, are you telling me, you would REALLY hire someone that gets drunk and passes out in a basement ?

As for the guy, yeah, he is what they call, collateral damage

ProgrammerForHire

Re: Drunken behavior is acceptable ?

Also, I don't think you need reasons to fire temps, depends of course on the internal company policy, but inappropriate behavior seems reason enough

ProgrammerForHire

Re: Drunken behavior is acceptable ?

On the grounds that they are alcoholics and try to involve the company in the next media scandal. You can find reasons if you want to fire someone

ProgrammerForHire

I would fire them both

Re: What's so wrong about a private email server?

Nothing is wrong, except the fact that no bureaucracy/ state in the world accepts this, also you are supposed to provide the logs and traces of what you did during your term, so you can be accountable if anything goes wrong. Not doing so is very much akin to hiding and / or deleting murder evidence.

This is not an ordinary job, but speaking of that, how many companies accept using outside mail accounts to do company business ?

ProgrammerForHire

Blunder ?

"How often can we say that an IT blunder might have changed the course of world history? Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server whilst serving as outgoing US President Barack Obama’s Secretary of State became a key element in the US presidential election this year."

For the love of Barrack, this was not a blunder. A blunder is when you forget to log out your email on a public computer. Being a high gov official and using outside technology to hide your activity , with good knowledge of what you're doing , is criminal and treason for all purposes

Re: Hallelujah - File Explorer's file path limit is not 256 any more !

You are somewhat right.. MAX_PATH is enforced by functions but only if you want them to.

The reason for all this is compatibility with FAT fs I think. Once they give that up it should be easy to just make that the default behaviour

ProgrammerForHire

Re: Hallelujah - File Explorer's file path limit is not 256 any more !

"The limit is not Explorer's. It is Win32's."

No it's not . The limit is 32767 characters IF you use the Unicode version of the API and IF you prefix the path with "\\?\" , part of the UNC scheme. Unicode is Microsoft's version of UTF16 and present since Windows 2000 in Win32 . That was 16 years ago.

The MAX_PATH limit is only for apps stil using ASCII and for Windows Explorer. I guess Microsoft hoped that retards , uhm, programmers , will switch to Unicode in their apps and then the will upgrade Explorer as well, but it still hasn't happened.

The limit in Explorer is kept for COMPATIBILITY.

NTFS as a file system doesn't have such a limit. It's also case discriminant if requested.

Also, anyone programmed on Linux ? Never encountered the PATH_MAX limit ?
