It's not all black. The screenshot of the right click context menu posted here is from office which for some reason has it's own theme that overrides windows settings. The actual black theme in windows 10 only applies to the new UWP system. Conventional win32 applications are still same as they ever were. Which actually pisses me off. I wanted that dark theme for file explorer.
Just because I like windows 10 doesn't mean I work for Microsoft. I know plenty of people who work at apple and google and like windows 10. But I see from your posting history that if anyone likes anything you don't, you automatically think of an affiliation between the two.
You can bet what ever you want. But the fact is Windows 10 enterprise adoption already stands at 11% with only 5 months in with people like Bank of America already saying "they are looking to adopt windows 10 as soon as possible". Compared to BoA my company is very small. So you can claim whatever you want based on your misunderstandings and wrong information but the fact is the people who spend millions on this stuff are already giving it a thumbs up.
a) My family doesn't understand exactly what I do. All they know is that I work with software. They don't care about the fact that i'm in R&D. For them working in software means i'm qualified to install windows.
b) This is the part I don't get. I work in a company with more than few thousand employees worldwide and our IT department has already started testing for the general rollout of windows 10 which will start somewhere around April 2017. I've even talked to a few guys in IT and none of them seem to have a problem with windows 10. I've actually quoted comments I've read here and on other websites to them and the "tin foil wearing conspiracy theory nut job" statement is actually a quote from one of them.
c) Yes I've seen the new T&C. I understood all the technical part. And any questions I had about the legal side I asked my friends in the legal department of my company.
So basically my judgment that windows 10 is safe to use for both me and the people I know is not just based on my understanding alone. The opinion of multiple employees of my company have gone into this. And frankly I know the people I work with. I know what there credentials are and I know how good they are at their job. And if those people say everything is ok then there is nothing anyone on any site or blog can say to change my mind.
Exactly what people might those be? I have a surface pro 4 and a surface book and windows 10 works fine on them. The drivers on the other hand need a lot of work. I gave my old surface pro 3 to my sister and windows 10 is working fine on that too. You really cant blame phones and tablets. Because its working fine on tablets and at this point anyone who actually has a windows phone is most probably a fan and knows windows 10 mobile isn't complete. Although Microsoft says otherwise.
Some of us have actual work to do so we can't waste time in finding the "right tools" to get things to work. We prefer things to just work instead.
And FYI Cortana wasn't pulled from the android store. The "Hey Cortana" feature was disabled through an update because it was creating issues with the microphone on some phones.
Then you should leave your PC for a while and step out into the real world. The whole "windows 10 is crap" propaganda mainly exists on tech sites. In the real world windows 10 is well received. I myself have helped upgrade nearly 50 PC's to windows 10 in the last month because for my friends and family having a masters in softwares means i'm only qualified to do so.
The only place where I've faced reluctance to 10 is when somebody reads comments like the ones that constantly feature here, in which case it takes less than 2 mins to convince them to upgrade. After all in the end who are they going to trust? Some tin foil wearing conspiracy theory nut job who says windows 10 is stealing their data or the guy whom they know that tells them exactly what data is being collected and how they can turn it off.
I'm just surprised no body said UNIX runs on more devices than windows because if you start off with UNIX as your base not only can you include Linux and android but you can also bring in everything by apple cause both Mac OSX and iOS are based on BSD which in turn is based on UNIX.
This is what I love. Linux fanboys will count everything including router firmware to jack up Linux numbers. Wake up and smell the coffee people every year for the last 20 years has been the "the year of Linux" but it still hasn't happened. On the other hand windows phone has only been out for 5 years and yet it is labelled a failure by these very same people. The hypocrisy is most astonishing.
About 4 months ago after the release of windows 10 I said
"Whiners whine for a long time while happy people celebrate and then move on to find something else to be happy about. I wouldnt be surprised if in december while i'm playing rise of the tomb raider, people here will still be whining over windows 10."
Guess what I was right. And with windows 10 already on more PC's than Linux can ever dream of its already a success. Give it a rest people and find something more constructive to do. It's plain and clear nobody gives a damn about your paranoia's outside of tech blogs and sites.
That might be your experience but it isn't mine.
After reading people praise Linux again and again I finally decided to give it another try after a 3 year hiatus. Downloaded Linux Mint 17.2 KDE. Put it on a USB and installed it. And guess what? The out of box experience was absolutely shitty.
First of all the display resolution was wrong. My monitor is a 1440x900 but for some reason Linux didnt go above 1024x768. Finally read a few forums. Mucked about with xrandr and created a script to run at start up to fix the resolution. Thought it to be an in efficient method so generated a new xorg.conf then added the modeline for the new resolution and put it in the X11 folder.
With the display fixed i decided to watch a movie before installing other tools i need but behold. No sound in the headphones while the rear speakers worked. After mucking about with alsamixer and some other config files finally got that to work.
Then went onto install the tools i need. First up Oracle database. After searching across the internet and finding multiple 10 to 15 step tutorials on how to install it each step requiring multiple commands and scripts to be run i finally decided life is too short for this and installed windows 10 back.
If that's your definition of "works out of the box" i definitely don’t want to find out what you think doesn't work out of the box.
I don't think the fall update is going to be much help with these numbers. I expect big jumps when
a) Edge gets extension support.
b) They finally fix the one drive sync client.
c) When the one year free upgrade program is about to run out.
I for one upgraded to 10 on july 29th but have told everyone around me to wait till june 2016.
A jack in prices wouldn't be unwelcome if the quality of the product goes up with it. If HP actually thinks they can sell those plastics toys they have at the price of a premium notebook they are kidding themselves. The surface book, even though expensive, might actually get these OEMs to up their game and build better quality products which people wont mind paying a premium price for.
On the other hand if they actually think they can justify raising prices of their current laptops by pointing at microsoft as an example they are mistaken.
I've read on tech news sites that continuum works wireless as well. Meaning you can connect a bluetooth keyboard and mouse to the phone and use miracast to connect to a display. One of the sources for this is Paul Thurrott can anyone else confirm this? While thurrott's knowledge of Microsoft might be good, he could also be wrong.
Windows desktop, giving it away, but not to enterprise.

Surface, is actually doing well with revenues near the one billion mark last quarter.
Xbox consoles, Xbox One while behind the PS4 is breaking every sales milestone set by the Xbox 360, which was a very successful console.
Bing, They didn't beat Yahoo. The came to a deal with Yahoo where instead of using its own search Yahoo uses Bing search and both companies share the ad revenue. Its why you see a small "powered by bing" at the bottom of the page.
They are not forced. If i want i can keep one machine for personal use only and the company will give me another one for work. I even tried it for a while but carrying two laptops while traveling isn't exactly easy. If i leave the work laptop at home i can't do anything productive and if i leave my personal laptop at home all i have to browse the internet and check mail and stuff is my phone since the work laptop wouldn't even allow me to open gmail and outlook.
Running a VM isn't a problem. Trying to run the in house software inside a VM is.
While people here might find it easy to switch OS's in the real world its not really an option. Take me for example.
My company requires me to have around 7-8 pieces of software's on my PC for work. It's part of the whole BYOD thing. None of these will run on Linux and trying to run them in a VM will get me fired for going against company policy.
On the personal side if i do switch to Linux i lose access to around 99% of the 300+ games i have on steam. Not to mention to continue gaming i will either have to rely on the very limited steam library of games for Linux or buy a gaming console. Which brings me back to the original problem. On a console i will have to sign in with a user account and it will collect user data only this time there will be no way to stop any of it.
So while for people on tech forums it might be as easy as creating a bootable USB and wiping out windows to install Linux. In the real world its not that simple.
Can someone explain a scenario where you have more than 512 items in the start menu?
I currently have visual studio 2015, java 8, oracle database, postgres, the entire MS office suite, plus around 15 applications that my company needs me to keep installed. Apart from this other things like firefox, vlc etc. And utilities like wireshark and a few more. But i havent been able to hit the 512 item mark. How can anyone have more?
Daniel is right. The community is imploding all thanks to Microsoft. Ever since its inception they haven't been able to come up with a coherent plan for windows phone. First they tried to compete with apple by comparing it to the iPhone at the original launch. Then they decided to go after android. Now they are marketing it as a productivity device with windows 10. I mean someone should probably ask Microsoft to make up their mind of what they want the device to be and then release a new version.
Even the internals keep changing. First they put a shiny new interface on a windows CE core and say this is the phone. Then they move to NT with wp8.0 making half of the apps developed for wp7 useless. Then they jump on to the whole universal app platform craze and make so many changes to the API that many apps I use needed to be updated before they worked. And now they have a new Universal Windows Platform for apps with a completely different set of API's and even that's led to app crashes. WhatsApp is working on optimizing their app for w10. Truecaller had to pull their app for from the store and is going to release a windows 10 version "soon".
Not to mention all the interface and usability changes that accompany every version.
Microsoft really needs to sit down, think what they want from their phones and then do something about it. Even under Nadella the phone division feels like its still being run by ballmer with the age old Microsoft strategy of throwing everything(including the kitchen sink) at the wall and hoping something sticks.
The site takes a hit because Skype now has a new feature that shows you a snapshot of the website posted just like Facebook does. The owner of the IP address is Microsoft because the snapshot is created on skype servers and then pushed to you. The feature background has been there for months and has now been rolled out to users.
Sometimes people talk like they know so much but in fact know nothing of whats happening outside their small bubble..
See there is no quote in the article saying that that's why I was confused. But this seems to be a really idiotic move by Microsoft. There are plenty of people who aren't going to upgrade right now like people waiting for OneDrive placeholders, people waiting for drivers to be fixed and so on.
I for one have upgraded my Surface Pro 3 but no way I'm upgrading my gaming rig right now. For that i'll wait till July 2016 hoping NVidia, Microsoft, Razer and MSI get there shit together by that time. Windows 10 is just too inconsistent for my most used machine. My work laptop is still on 7 thanks to my company.
While the iPad does have some productivity apps that might meet certain people's criteria the lack of file system access and other things that a full blown OS has is going to turn off a lot of prospective buyers. The iPad is based on the concept of keeping everything in the cloud while most companies don't trust the cloud enough to keep sensitive data on it. They prefer to keep these on in house servers.
Although Apple does have a deal with IBM to make enterprise apps for the iPad so maybe they can come up with something to bypass this.
One area where the iPad Pro might be successful is designers but there also its going to have a tough fight with the many tablets that are already available. Why would these people give up the full functionality of Photoshop and Illustrator to use something like what adobe showed on stage when they can use Photoshop on such tablets at lower prices?

People seem to be getting the wrong idea. I'm not defending Apple. A Smartphone OS on a 13" device meant for enterprise with no external mouse support and no file system access is probably the dumbest idea ever.
I'm just saying the iPad pro doesn't need a trackpad because iOS has no support for them.
