For PITY'S SAKE, DON'T BUY an iPHONE 5S, begs FSF

Oz

Re: Fingerprint scanner Yawn

"How many of the people who are whingeing about the iPhone's fingerprint scanner use a telephone or a tablet via a TOUCHSCREEN?"

Most of them probably, but we know for sure that the iPhone's touchscreen is just that - there is no scanning mechanism built into the earlier iPhone. There may be fingerprints all over my tablet, but I can be confident that they are not going to GCHQ or NSA. With fingerprints being scanned by the 5S we don't know for definite what happens with them, or even if the full image is scanned or just a hash of it. The Apple assertion that the scan (whatever form it is in) doesn't get uploaded to their servers doesn't mean a lot. If they an unequivocal statement saying that it is not uploaded to ANY servers, anywhere in the world, then people like the FSF should be pacified.

I was watching the News last night, about this very subject. They interviewed the mother of April Jones, in tears, saying that this filter could have kept her daughter safe. Whilst she is understandably upset, I see that comment as scare mongering and of no real relevance. Extreme porn is already blocked and, as Mark Bridger is an adult, he could easily unbolck the fiter and then carry on browsing naughty sites (within reason) unhindered.

There was p0rn on Betamax.

The big problem was the size of film that could contained on a physical media item. Longer movies required 2 Betamax tapes, but only 1 VHS - hence VHS was the preferred medium for film distributors and home buyers alike.

Re Internet Radio

The problem is that your experience is not everyone's. My FM reception is brilliant, but my DAB is flaky at best. I listen to music on the radio, and I just can't stand the bubbling effect as the signal goes in and out. For me, unlike, you, DAB is not the panacea - much as I would like to be.

Re: Mini passport

And that was the basic problem with the ID card as it was. Large numbers of places both inside and outside the UK were refusing to take it as a legitimate source of proof of identity. You couldn't even guarantee who would or would not take it, so you have to carry your passport as well - a waste of £30, and a whole lot more cash wasted by the government. I'm not sure that a photo Passport would fare much better?

Oh, that's OK then. Making an (mildly flippant) analogy, if I run around the street with a shotgun shooting at people, but missing them all, is that OK as well?

The interception of private data is illegal across a number of countries, so also no-one has been harmed, according to Mr Schimdt, there is no doubt that the company's action were illegal.

Router SID and MAC = location?

I'm about to move house, so if Google are reliant on this information to "locate" me, then will be locating me wrongly ad infinitum (or until I change my router). You would hope there is some method of over-riding this location information at Google's end, which would then prove that harvesting all this was unnecessary, as they could get location information by other means!
