Re: Same old, same old...

Yup we have a staff wifi access point QR code too, only seems to allow connect on Android though, iphone reads it but does not allow you to connect.

We also have a QR code on our corporate headed paper, it contains a business card with our phone numbers Address, website and email. just scan and save our business to your phones address book. or just scan to call/email etc.

Re: Where does the heat go?

Simple explanation: yes the current thermal RTGs are weedy at 110W but they are also low efficiency, so say* a pellet gives of 1KW then the Radiators must emit 890W of heat.

If you use a more efficient Stirling Engine it can give out 300w of power from a pellet, but they will only give out 700w of heat, meaning the radiator can actually be smaller.

The pellet source is still outputting 1KW, by being more efficient in conversion you reduce the amount of heat you need to radiate.

Meaning the same size radiators as current thermocouples can cope with a larger heat source on stirling.

*numbers are example only for explanation purposes - not real figures!

Re: Where does the heat go?

Same place it goes with a thermocouple RTG - Those black fin radiator cylinders sticking out the arse of curiosity or on the arm of voyager...

Parax

Free Piston Stirling RTG

Nasa Glenn have been researching free piston strirling engines for a few years now to replace thermocouple RTG's, they are using the same hot fuel pellet as the current thermocouple RTG's and are more efficient, curiosity nearly got the first but testing was not complete in time.

It's interesting to see that they have advanced from a waste pellet to a fissionable reactor.

It's also nice to see old ideas coming back with new methods. And why no one is considering farming all hot waste with many many stirling units is an interesting question.

Why do Smart TV UIs suck?

Parax

Re: iPlayer 2 Click Fail!

haha.. but the channel 5 point is more valid.

The 'established method' is a bbc launcher thing only, you are going to need to get other channels to adopt this if you want it as a standard on the red button. then perhaps the tv's might be more inclined to work that way.

BUT what about 'IP only' tv channels which channels Red button would you put them on? or how else would you access it? or would this require a totally different method? surely one that does all is the best solution? instead of some on a menu and others via red button.

Personally I'd still like the option to place internet services onto specific channel numbers so I can dial up youtube or fetchtv or something else without menus at all.

Parax
Stop

iPlayer 2 Click Fail!

That's just wrong. if the TV is off, or if the TV is tuned into channel 5, or if the tv was playing from a DVD Then it's Always going to be more than 2 pressess. The 2 button thing only works if your already on a BBC channel.

Anyway, My FreeviewHD+ box has iplayer mapped to channel 222 (thats BBC via a phone style alpha numeric pad) it also has sky player on 759 (again sky) thats very useful but its all preset.

I'll only be interested in a smart TV if I can configure it myself, it'd be nice if I could choose what to map to which chanel numbers then I'd be happy.

"unique star-shaped rubber fuel grain"

How unique is it? I was under the impression that all compound hybrid rockets had this star shaped chamber in the grain material. Specifically including the hybrid rocket on Burt Rutans Space ship one.

It's designed this way so that as the material burns away the star shape morphs to an enlarged circle but the surface area remains constant throughout the burn, providing nice constant pressure for the nozzle, and hence nice steady thrust.

Apple offered Samsung a patent licensing deal

And so is this where the copy claim falls apart?? so if it's licenceable patented tech, then it's a patent infringement NOT a copy? unless your patents wont stand up and you know it, and hence are unwilling to claim infringement. Surely then this licensing evidence does not affect the original claims?

Panasonic chief says no to low-cost OLED TVs

Flame

Business stifles innovation.

They don't want OLED TV's yet because they put in 20+ year investments into LCD plants (and probably paid off Plasma Plants too) so they can't build new factories until they have sold LCD's for 20 years, to pay off the loans.

New technology can't come too quickly if you forecast long.

The only way to get OLED quickly is for a new comer (no existing debts to pay) to come to market and steal a lead, forcing their hand.

The incentive still encourages the manufacturer to make and sell more electric cars its now in their interest so it still works as an incentive.
