Some time ago I decided to purge my two Macs (one Intel iMac still running Mojave and one Air M2 on Sequoia) from anything to do Microsoft.
So far, my experiences with the latest (for Sequoia) Libreoffice is quite good. It reads and writes both xlsx and docx, so far without problems.
Now I feel better.

Not quite.
My Early 2011 MB Pro 17" is running almost every day as a desktop machine with external monitor, keyboard+mouse and an Akitio Thunder Dock Tbolt hub that gives me 2 x ESATA, 2 x USB 3.0 and one FW 800, plus one extra Tbolt. The MB Pro itself has an Xpress Card slot for further expansion.
I've myself changed fans on it twice, battery once, HD twice (it's now a Samsung 1TB SSD) and I upgraded the RAM to 16GB. This is a machine that earns the Pro designation.
I also have an MB Air 2013 13" with 8GB which has proved itself capable enough for serious video and audio editing as well as being a handy typewriter.
The new MB 'Pro' is an embarrassing joke. Eventually, I'll also be looking for a new machine, but I very much doubt it'll be adorned with partially eaten fruit on the lid.
VR will be a dream come true for flight simulators – the gaming variety and professional training. I watched my daughter (now a captain) spend countless hours with X-Plane on a crappy PC, flying navigations and approaches. VR will be a whole new ballgame.
And yes, I'm chafing at the bit to be able to turn my head to look for that 109 or Zero on my six!
Nobody has mentioned a very important component yet – audio.
If we have 360 degrees visual freedom, we'll also need at least 5+1 surround in a head worn device, won't we? AND, the software has to pan and mix all the tracks (with the exception of the +1, the bass, arbitrarily, depending on head movements.

A vital feature of NDE, the editing list is saved with the file, so you can open it months later with all edits present and correct for further adjustments or additions.
I would never consider a PS replacement without NDE. ;-)
