Trying out Microsoft's pre-release OS/2 2.0

neozeed

Re: 30 years later...

For a while you could make good money for installing OS/2.

It was either a snap, and no big deal once you knew how to deal with the timing issues of the floppy drives, or you just added a second hard disk, and did the double backup/restore trick, and restored a prior installed version, and swapped drivers as necessary.

I have no idea why IBM could never fix the floppy driver, yet at the same time, I never had any issues (other than TIME) for installing Windows NT 3.1/3.5 from floppy disks.

Preview edition of Microsoft OS/2 2.0 surfaces on eBay

Yeah thanks for helping find it.

Oh wait, no you did the opposite.

It's saved BECAUSE of us, despite you.

Re: Nice museum piece

You'll be happy to know that ALL the floppies read sucessfully. I've installed the OS and the toolkit, I need to reconfigure 86box to try the networking out.

Re: Nice museum piece

First thing we’re going to do is image them.

First ever 64-bit version of Windows rediscovered … and a C compiler for it too

Re: Mine's still going strong

Looks like i'll have a slideshow of a few pictures I took before it died ...

Re: Mine's still going strong

So just after this got published I was porting some games, and my Alpha just died. I think it is the PSU. Is there a way to reachout for some pictures of what you did with that ATX psu? I had just released all the non identifying bits, and then the machine dies. HALP!!!111one

Got Oracle? Got VMware? Going cloud? You could be stung for huge licensing fees

Re: Legal motivation: None?

Have you ever been oracle audited? Did you fight? If so wish I worked with you.

It was cheaper to buy low core servers than to deal with Oracle.

neozeed

Re: vSphere 6

Simple cba:

Fight oracle or buy shitty small core servers?

Shitty 1u servers that have 100% iscsi Luns are much cheaper.

neozeed

Not news. ..

I consolidated a companies entire data centre footprint into 1/2 a rack. The only physical 1u servers were vcenter and Oracle. And this is circa 2008! Oracle has always been insane to the point of forcing me to find pentium d cpus instead of later and faster stuff with the inevitable higher core/thread count.

Re: They don't know who their potential customers are

blackberry never made a good product. That is the thing that waterloo never could get through their thick skulls. their phones were and are total shite.

if they made good phones there wouldn't have been the iPhone reaction to their horribly antiquated design.

The #1 problem with RIM was they were and still are based in this hokey small town of Waterloo. They have horse posts all over town for people who use horse and buggies. it is not a tech place. everyone went to either University of Waterloo, or wilfrid laurier univerity. they all had the same teachers, and they all thought the same. Everyone had this QNX fetish because, it's what their professors used in the 80's on the ICON terminals.

They got lucky back in the day, because Microsoft couldn't seem to grasp that an email client that integrated with Exchange on Windows CE would have been a good thing. But once the market had options, and specifically options that didn't revolve around the BES server, it was bye bye RIM.

But the Priv isn't so bad.

Slashdot, SourceForge slurped by travel publisher

neozeed

Sourceforge is the best, bar none

They did away with the mallard thing years ago. They host your projects and file dumps for free. They have been around a LOT longer than the other flash in the pans, that are far too overvalued.

Oldest is best.

So it's a travel site. I'm sure it'll be direct advertising. Whoopee. For the value the site provides that is fine, unlike github and it's insane venture funding and unrealistic value. Once this tech bubble pops, gitlab will be gone, and sourceforge will creak on.

Microsoft sounds 100-day DOOM KLAXON for Windows Server 2003

virtualize!

who isnt virtualizing these days?

Hardware becomes pretty moot. Run it in esxi, or even windows tablet server + hyperv.

Heck, nt 4 and exchange 5.5 work just fine, smtp is still smtp. And its system requirements are microscopic compared to 2012.

Why upgrade inside servers?

neozeed

best server since nt 4.0

2003 was the last version that had humans qa the product, and boy, does it show!

What should i "upgrade" to? Server tablet edition?

Lol, thanks but no thanks.

Wanna run Windows 10 Preview on your Lumia? Of course you do. Now 33 mobes supported
