Microsoft's lack of quality control is out of control

TonySomerset

Hated but Inescapable

So much about MS is totally wrong. I do not need a nursemaid. I do not need that phantom hand constasntlyt changing things behind my back or stuff my machine with completely unwanted gizzmoes. But it is very had to turn off MS after decades of building dependent software that I need and want to use daily to survive. Elsewhere it would be ranked as blackmail or extortion, in the IT world as it is just shrugged off as "normal".

'Windows sucks,' former Microsoft engineer says, explains how to fix it

TonySomerset

Sense at Last

At last that describes the OS system that I REALLY REALLY need. Leaves me in control and does what I want it to. Something that doesnt break me PC at every update, that doesnt stuff my PC wholesale with feature that constantly irritate and drive me mad.

When can I get it PLEASE!

UK government says digital ID won't be compulsory – honest

TonySomerset

Digital Identity but not held by the Government

Our online presence and identity is so open to abuse with current "verification" so an digital ID is probably inevitable at some point. However there is absolutely no trust that the Government can restrain itself, restricting exactly who, when and for what reason any of its departments can access that data. Worse still the creation and retention of such vital data is irresistibly wide open to data mining and monetisation. It has to be a parliament defined and restricted independent organisation with robust rules as to what data is required and the who when and what can access it, all again prescribed by Parliament.

Hundreds of orgs urge Microsoft: don’t kill off free Windows 10 updates

TonySomerset

Not Win11 never

Just to join the chorus. NO I dont want Win11. Dont even want Win10, far to intrusive and constantly stuffing things in my face not in the least interested in or asked for. Just an OS PLEASE that just give me the switch so I can have just what I want

Amazon will refund $1.5B to 35M customers allegedly duped into paying for Prime

TonySomerset

Cancel yes But

If you are not a Prime user Amazon requires you to "accept" premium delivery at £4.99 without any alternatives of a standard delivery. So by the backdoor they carry on winning.

The air is hissing out of the overinflated AI balloon

TonySomerset

Overblown IT

It is not just AI being oversold. Cloud storage is way over hyped. Consider 8B people rising to 10B with ALL their IT data (and all their selfies) stored in the cloud - for ever! Data farms cannot grow that big, fact. Someone somewhere will start to decide which of your personal data is trivial and can be deleted, almost certainly without your prior consent. So where to go now for your precious memories?

Microsoft keeps adding stuff into Windows we don't want – here's what we actually need

TonySomerset

Future Sighted

Spot on. Yes please on so many of your top ten. However I am only an simple PC user but if only:

PC supported me in the way that I actually work.

Offered a simple hierarchy of on/off/uninstall of all support features.

An icon to search in any open App without having to go find Find.

Recognised that I didnt want my PC to be cloud based.

If I chose to have anniversary reminder they were in my local time and I could choose who to or not be reminded on and able to correct data errors

Gave me back by purchased Apps without forcing an annual subscription. When my skills increase then the option to buy the upgraded features.

A PC that worked consistently without changing its settings without my prior approval.

A responsive OS provider that listened then responded to user problems and invited feedback.

Kept my data secure on my machine without sharing to some inner circle.

Didnt require me to link up all my various 'hats' that i use for varying aspects of my work.

A PC that knew me and I didnt have to prove at every step that I was still that same person using for all these past years.

Is that too much to ask?

Has Windows 11 really lost marketshare to Windows 10?

TonySomerset

Window11 is several steps far too far. MS increasingly want to funnel and control your access and usage of what it offers to you. Plus hoovering up behind the scenes all of your traffic, connections and contents to exploit and monetise.

NO THANK YOU.

Win10 is already too far down that road. When they, MS, pulls the plug I will be going OpenSource -Zorus calls.

AI in the enterprise: AI may as well stand for automatic idiot – but that doesn't mean all machine learning is bad

Teacher also Judge

Fallible humans set the teaching tasks and fallible humans decide whether a 'good' outcome should be rewarded. So it is just humans training for human responses albeit a couple paces removed. Except no group of humans can simulate the real world interactions of the whole world of humans.

Microsoft Windows 10 October update giving HP users BSOD

Windows Update failure again

Just had a Windows auto update and after login faced with blackscreen and message device not found, yet again, Outlook hanging. Same procedure, switch off router, reboot then power off, switch router on, then reboot again. Simple. So our thanks to MS for making our lives so exciting, stressful and saving us from having to do real work.

Bloke sues Microsoft: Give me $600m – or my copy of Windows 7 back

TonySomerset

Our David

Bravo, we all wish you well and I am ashamed we didn't have your guts.

I too am totally indignant at Software Houses just arbitrarily taking away purchased programmes and forcing me onto an upgrade or worse a subscription service I didn't seek, need or want.

It's nuts but 'shared' is still shorthand for 'worthless'

TonySomerset

Invigorating

Just very occasionally you come across words that resonate. This peel is still ringing around my head. Yes, shared outcomes can be far, far greater than any ones input. My only nagging worry is that the naysayers will drown that precious idea before it gets legs.

National Grid's new designer pylon is 'too white and boring' – Pylon Appreciation Society

TonySomerset

Not Hidden by Design

First off, all power lines should be buried.

Second this is an awful bad design. It looks heavy and is very static. Compare it to the narrow V design, at least that had a degree of grace. This is going to impose on the landscape, no matter what colour chosen to 'blend in'. Has anyone with any design skills looked at this!

At least the old pylons were by design airy, light and insubstantial within the landscape.
