There is one weakness with the Apple/Google approach: it still requires a central server to actually handle the disclosure of infections.

It is still far better than the NHS project, which is dangerous and doomed to fail.

I have been running my phone without google apps and services installed since January. It started as an experiment, but I've not ever felt the need to go back.

It's still limited to nerds for now, but if the demand were there it wouldn't take much to get it ready for the mainstream.

If someone can get a push notification framework that doesn't rely on google, it could take off very quickly.

To offer anther viewpoint: I have the Gigabit link with them and can easily pull 900mbps. Pretty sure I'm hitting my hardware limits rather than their connection speed limit.

I get the need for them to keep moving forward but this release just isn't giving any incentive to upgrade at all.

but the update breaks stuff, constantly.

Re: Anybody not running through a VPN deserves what they get, bedbugs and all.

It's also easy enough to set up your own VPN, if you're worried about getting hacked. Not AS easy as signing up to a 3rd party service, but not too bad.
