Tech's Volkswagen moment? Trend Micro accused of cheating Microsoft driver QA by detecting test suite

Am I Misunderstanding?

The sentence which struck me in the article was "The problem is that Trend Micro's driver is insecure by design, making it a perfect candidate for abuse by malicious actors around the world." Am I misunderstand what this is saying, or is there a seemingly deliberate backdoor in their products? If so, for whose benefit?

'Garth' => 'Gareth', of course.

Re: A Pox On Gareth Corfield's House.

Oh dear! It's always hard to be sure on El Reg, but I have a horrible feeling you mean it seriously.

Meatbag: A derogatory name for humans or other biological beings used by non-biological beings (i.e. robots). From the Urban Dictionary, https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Meat%20Bag. Attributed to the robot Bender and the killer droid HK-47.

So a highly appropriate term in the context of a crash caused by a human being overriding the judgement of a machine. I would offer Garth Corfield a pint (of oil, naturally), but the icon might get confusing.

F-Secure DNS Check

Another link for the DNS checker program is https://www.f-secure.com/en/web/labs_global/dns-check.

This has, for me, two advantages over the one in the article: firstly it is explicitly on the F-Secure domain; and secondly the F-Secure certificate is owned by F-Secure and verified by Verizon, whereas the ismydnshijacked.com certificate is owned anonymously and verified by GoDaddy. It's a comfort thing.

I actually had a customer whose router had been hacked to do just this last year. Fortunately it was done crudely so it was easy to spot, but a tool which checks subtler hijacks looks like a useful addition to the toolbox.
