Gagging the honest researchers trying to warn you there's a problem and letting the criminal hackers run free making problems.
Nice.

I totally support the quest for the NSA to build an unbreakable encryption method that includes a golden key that only they can use as a back door , presumably tied to NSA computers some how so China can't use it etc etc.
Of course, step two is for china and other nations to steal it , and make a very tiny modification as to who exactly is holding that golden key , and who exactly is locked out and can never get in .
Not to mention every large corperation and group in the world doing the same , thus enhancing privacy (specifically , choking off NSA's industrial espionage operations) rather than reducing it.
Imagine a car maker in germany whom no one can hack and find out what next years model looks like , so they make good sales, as opposed to poor sales because some americans got a cheap knock off look a like going before they could finish the real deal.
:)
I actually have nothing against Ubuntu.
The problem is with stunts like this , Canon is demonstrating they think they're the next Windows, and I'm using ubuntu because I'm running away from Windows, not running into the arms of the next Windows Wannabe.
thats where my problem lies.
The point of Linux is to avoid windows.
Not watch a distribution turn into windows.
My current "other computer" has Ubuntu 11 on it . It's all it can handle so it's not upgrading.
My current windows machine , when I get a new machine the current one will go to Mint , or whatever is easy to use / not a windows Wannabe. Ubuntu is now off the list.
Mobile data, requires a cell phone. Or at least a data stick that pretends to be a cell phone.
And a monthly contract with the local provider. Who's gonna want money every month.
How is that gonna work ? They gonna charge you a monthly rate for your Telivision ? Forget that !
Running a service is a mistake, especially for a single individual.
Building an email client that encrypts before it sends , and then sends garbage like
kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3 kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3
kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3 kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3
kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3 kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3
kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3 kdso7 34ij2 ab,x3
would be easier. Just download the client and use it with your regular email service.
The theory of encryption isn't that hard to understand, and it is surprisingly easy for a single person to write an encryption routine that uses, say , a photograph you shot with your cell phone, as a key.
So yes, there likely is a lot of "custom" encryption out there that the security agencies are trying very hard to keep from being passed around, because it would sink them.
The only real problem is the masses don't know how to upload such a photo to their computer and then find it so they can use it as a key , though even minimally experienced computer techies will have no problem.
That's like allowing the Fox to build the hen house!! What a sad, sad way to make "improvements!"
The USA has been on this kick for a couple of years now. Having their industrial espionage exposed to the public has only sped up attempts to increase it , not slown it down. Microsoft should be ashamed of their previous cooperation and handing over all data to the NSA.
But what do they do ?
They make a new operating system that identifies each individual user so they can be spied up and the data kept on a per person basis , instead of a per computer basis. They don't even hide this , they want to link you to all your personal accounts and hand over everything to the NSA.
They're not kidding. They're just stupid.
Cloud is a solution looking for a problem.
I mean really , we all now pay by the gigabyte for uploading and downloading , and they're trying to get us to store gigabytes of data in the cloud ? WTF is up with that ?
I look at a terabyte back up drive and it comes with software to back up the whole terabyte into the cloud. WTF ? Do I look like I have the money to transfer a terabyte of data to the cloud ? Let alone bring it back later ? no ! That's why I'm buying the terabyte back up drive in the first place ! Duh !
Why would you use dead storage on a server anyways ? Do you have any idea how cheap a couple of usb terabyte drives are ? Do you have any idea how expensive a terabyte of data transmitted over the internet is ? And now you want to talk encryption to defend an already economically indefensible business plan.
If security is your concern , then you must run a high speed connection to your basement and set up your own server or two. Renting from anyone else is a total fail on the security front. They can all be supenaed , sued, the door kicked in by police , or just plain hacked.
And if the computer farm is strictly for internal use, the high speed connection should be skipped entirely , and no internet connection at all should be permitted. (lock all the usb ports , floppy drives, cd roms , on all the computers. And set up the routers so that people can't just pull a network cable out of a computer and plug it into their lap top)
Internal facing networks are no safer. the night janiter plops a rasberry computer with a wireless modem to the outside world into an unused jack and moves along and no one is the wiser. (rasberry's are very small). And with China constantly gathering private information on people, and a long history of black mailing (usually ex chinese patriots ... we have a gun to your grandads head, you will do as you are told...) , yeah , they're going to penetrate everything.
Even if you lock out the chinese immigratns, they have home addresses. They can black mail the imigrants into planting letter bombs (carry them by hand so the post office can't intercept them) , and after a few go off start threatenning americans "We know where you live, thank you for giving the names and addresses of your wife and children you will do as we say OR ELSE !" ....
And NSA is going to be up there saying "YOU NEED US ! THIS IS OUR TIME !" but really , it's theyr'e breaking of everyone's encryption everywhere that caused this. We need more NSA like we need a hole in our heads.
They're still pushing for weakenned security because they believe they are in the right , they are justified, they are the white knight protecting us ,and they have absolutly no intention of stopping.
We must write our own encryption. They will continue to sabatage their own, this much has been made obvious in the post snowden era. Our own encryption , our own hardlware ... anything they could get their hands on they tainted , we cannot trust anything made in the USA .
They even added extra hardware to their own routers (Cisco) before shipping them out of country. If you aint a US Citizen ..forget about it ! Buy local. Make local.
Good thing those rasberry computers are only 25$ a pop. I see a lot of use for them coming up.
Yes. The world is sick of terrorists who know one person in 10 000 willl beleive them so they can make trouble on the other side of the world through the internet.
The world is sick of guys in China hacking their Guild Wars account ,and they keep getting messages that someone in china tried to log into your account.
The world is sick of denial of service attacks from russia shutting down their favorite games and demanding ransom money.
It's time to move to national computer networks. Because I don't know about you , but I don't speak chinese , or russian , or japanese, or korean , and I see no reason to be connected to those networks.
The solution to the problem is not to try and take over the existing bug riddled spy laden world wide internet.
The solution is to make your own for your nation, possibly kicking out any foriegn traffic out of certain area's (government servers and individuals) , and create a filter for , say private individuals who don't speak chinese to cancel all traffic from china , they're not interested.
The current internet software might not be capable of this ,but it should be possible to invent new software. I can imagine a network where the source of all transmissions must be included , and if you fake a transmission , (ie: say it's from the local state) the gateways that let traffic in from the outside will automatically block it.
Similarily , people usually complain "They'll just use a proxy" but any decent network administrator can track network traffic in the current network , never mind a new one designed with security from the ground up , and external traffic flowing to one computer and then going all over the inside of your national network will be quickly located.
